You knew it was coming, but still it doesn't make it any easier.

Life is not as happy as I'd like it to be right now. Troy's grandfather is in his last few days of life. The rest of the family left today for Illinois to say goodbye. I wish I could have gone with them, but I've only been at my job for three months and taking another week off (after doing so last month) is probably not wise. It was hard to say goodbye this morning because I hate that he has to go through this and I won't be there to support him. If he were going out of town with work for a week, I'd miss him, but it wouldn't be like this.

Also, after nearly 150 years in business, the Rocky Mountain News published its last edition on Friday. This video is so, so sad:

Two of the names on the list of newsroom staff were people I used to work with. Where do they go now? Uproot their families and try to find a paper somewhere that's still hiring? Or try to rework their skill set in a way that will nab them a job writing a corporate newsletter or designing graphics for Web sites? (These jobs are few and far between, by the way, and the competition is fierce). Other industries will start hiring again once the economy improves, but I'm not sure newspapers will. I guess I'm lucky, because I had the opportunity to work in a newsroom, I made the choice to leave, and I'm young enough to stay afloat financially by working an entry-level job while I chart a new career path. But it still sucks to watch your adolescent dream become an impossibility.
