And so to Slovakia. [Blog post, by me] #projectBrno

(Or, the Slovakian for "beer" is "Hodor!")Letisko M. R. Štefánik -- the airport -- is big, bright and shiny and modern. Rather appealing. Bratislava is only about the same size as Brno -- under half a million inhabitants -- but it's a capital city and the difference shows in the airport. I took some Euros out from a handy ATM, cursing myself for ( Read more... )

I did vaguely notice the stuff across the bridge, but I never crossed it. It *was* really pleasant to see a nice big river again -- I miss the water in this dry city.

I grumble, but I am sure I'll return to Bratislava in time. It's the nearest capital to me, and while it's a lot more expensive than Brno with little to show for it, by British standards it's as cheap as outer Yorkshire or less.

(And how I missed seeing the Tour de France there this year! :¬( )

At some point I would love to come visit you in Brno (ok, it may not happen for the guitar fest) but you haven't quite sold me the idea of going to Bratislava or Slovakia just yet :)

I can understand that. Prague is lovely, though, and I found a friendly and obliging hostel, Franz Kafka, that only cost about £15/night with breakfast and fast wifi. A couple of days there and then a £7 train ride to Brno is eminently doable.

I think I'd like to live in Prague at some point, for a while -- there's clearly a lot more going on than here. It's more expensive, though I've not seen enough to compare with Bratislava. Brno folk think it's overpriced, but compared to the West, it's very cheap.

Mind you, I've been talking to some Romanians and Belarussians recently, and they moan about how viciously expensive Brno is... :¬D

I read your notes about Brno and Bratislava thoroughly. It´s interesting to take the perspective of a foreigner (for example, the habit or removing shoes as one enters a home doesn´t seem remarkable to me but apparently it´s not routine everywhere). I live in Slovakia, so let me advocate Bratislava/Slovakia a little ( ... )

Oh, well, good! I'm very glad to know that someone who is not already a friend is reading this stuff.

There will be more soon -- I have a ¾ written post on the other laptop already. It's more personal so far but there will be more travel-oriented stuff up soon,
