In light of the "Hallmark Holiday", I reflect on the term "best friend".
How do you define this relationship? By the way, don't let any third grader sway you; it's possible to have more than one best friend.
I define a "best friend" is:
-someone you don't have to censor yourself for
-someone you don't need to explain yourself to
-someone that can be out of the loop, separated from you, for one reason or another, and when you meet up again, you pick up where you left off.
I've have this experience with a few best friends.
I've been in relationships with friends, ( a relationship is not just with a signifigant other... it's anyone you interact you. We have relationships with everyone. even the doorman at your apartment complex) where you can tell them a story about something that happened to you.. and not have to worry about what they will think. You tell it without omission, without having to go into detail about why and did something, or how you felt about it. They know your backstory. They know the main character. This person knows you, respects you, loves you.
I've been in relatioships with friends, that we go out of town, out of the country, across the country, go to college, go on year long backpacking adventures (them, not me), lose internet connection, get lost in schoolwork, etc etc etc, and we lose touch. But when we finally make it back to each other, it's like we saw each other yesterday. We hug, say hi and keep walking on the path.
I know. I AM SURE. I AM CERTAIN, that when I meet up again with my best friend, Matthew James O'Connell Jr. It will be this way. It will be EXACTLY this way. There is a story to share, but there will be no questions, no explanations. Acutally, there will be no words necessary. We will hug, and I will know. But it won't matter. We wil just keep walking. or biking. Probably biking.
Cheers to best friends. Wherever (really anywhere) they may be.
