One year in

Jul 24, 2015 23:43

Today has been spent reminiscing about our first day with our girls - how warm it was, how the hospital had no ice and how we spent those first few hours with our babies. In one way I would do the year all over again; in another we are so excited for the next year. I got to thinking about what I’ve learnt this year and thought I’d share!

1 - People will always comment - that is fun as I’m a people person and I like interacting with people but sometimes I find myself standing up for my children. They aren’t tortures, big or double trouble. They are fun, bright and a blessing.

2 - I’m not as tanked as I thought I would be - carting two car seats in and out of the house, carrying two babies, I’m not gonna lie I thought I’d have some muscles by now

3 - I am not my best me when I just wake up - it takes a few minutes for myself to kick in

4 - I’ve learnt not to feel guilty - if I get dishes and some laundry done I’m happy. Sitting with the girls playing or going out and about is much more pleasant and fun as well as sitting relaxing when the girls are napping. I’m clean, the girls are clean, the house is as clean as it needs to be- we are all happy

5- I don’t have control - I hate when the girls are sick and I panic. But the girls have proven themselves resilient and I have come out the other side

6 - The more chilled I am, the more things don’t stick. The more I stress the more the girls irritate me and get irritated. Not good.

7 - Having twins means I don’t get to do some things I could do with a single baby. But I’ve also enjoyed what comes with having twins - watching their wee relationship develop and reaching milestones times two.

8 - Speaking well in general about our relationship and about the twins has been key this year and will continue to be - it’s not just about avoiding negativity or being naive- it’s about seeing with faith and giving voice to that reality.

9 - We still do date nights - even if its a wee date in the living room - we used to make a rule not to talk about the girls but they are too much fun and part of our relationship so they don’t hinder date night. We have cried laughing at funny things they have done that we maybe captured on our phones.

10 - I have been so blessed by how the girls have been a blessing not just to us but to our friendships. We have fun as a group including the girls as well as enjoying times with our friends and family.

Here’s to another year of fun, learning and blessings. Thanks to all those who have been a part of the journey with us and for all the sweet messages via facebook and instagram and iphone. God bless.
