Life on Mars 2.08, without a doubt.
Okay, so, for once, I'm going to concentrate on the good things about LoM 2.08, because I figure you've all heard me yap on at length about the bad, and really, there were good things, there really were.
1. Emotion --- there's no denying that this episode makes you feel. What you feel depends on many factors, but it evokes strong emotions. I cried crazy amounts at the end of the series. CRAZY AMOUNTS. I literally had sobbing sessions over days (I was a little overinvested, I admit that.)
2. Surprise and Awe --- I never genuinely believed Sam would stay/go back to 1973. I felt, emotionally, that he should (Sam/Gene OTP 4eva, yo), but logically I knew he shouldn't. Turned out, of course, that logic didn't come into it. So, it really shocked me when the episode unfolded the way it did. I was on tenterhooks, the tips of my toes, perched on my chair, in complete and utter compulsion.
3. Resolution --- there may be myriad questions left, but there's also a very real resolution to the central conflict of the show: Sam going home. Sam goes home, in the end. Home just wasn't where he thought it was when he first asked the question.
(The runner up, of course, has to be ALL of the Dexter season finales, and a few of the Psych ones too.)
