Okay, so I know there are all kinds of addictions, and not always the kind that are bad for your health. Sometimes they are just bad for your wallet. Like me - I was raised by a collector, so I practiced what collectors do. You know buying toys but keeping them in their original packaging, buying a second if you really wanted it displayed, putting trading cards in sheets and binders, all that crazy stuff. I finally broke that habbit during college minus some LOTR insanity since I did double up figures there now and then. Got out of buying trading cards. Just kind of mellowed out on the fandom merchandise.
Well tonight I bought a few, okay three, Fullmetal Alchemist figures and it got me thinking. I'm still doing the insane collector thing, but in a more fun way since I got into anime. The figures I buy I get with the full intention of opening them and displaying them.
In the last few years I've managed to get a lot of figures for a lot of series that I really enjoy. Even to this day I think Death Note still holds the place for most figures and most money spent with Code Geass coming in second. I know it's not really a bad thing cause I enjoy them. I like seeing characters that I love lining my computer desk or the display shelves in my room, book shelf space, etc. But I also know that most of my friends don't get it. Even one of my local anime friends said she doesn't get my buying tastes. She said she understands me getting statues or the figures that come with limited edition DVDs but the little figures I get just seem pointless to her. I wish I knew how to explain that they just kinda make me happy. Maybe its that crazy writer gene, having the little guys around makes it seem like your less alone even when you're completely alone. And yes, I realize if they start talking to me I should be afraid ;)
And I really hope this post is coming across as contemplative cause I'm not really complaining, just kinda verbalizing my weird observation tonight. Even when I spend a bit more money on figures now, especially since 98% of them are imported, I like knowing I spend my money on this verses other vices I watch people do (drinking in particular). Liking anime is an expense in and of itself, being a collector and avid manga reader add to that, but you know when you work I think it's good to have those vices that give you happy things to surround yourself with. Well, that and coffee :D
