question for the tech savvies on my F-list

I have an off brand mp3 player.  I'd like your input on a music downloading site that will let me:

-download music to my computer and mp3 player without having to purchase the song.  (This is primarily for my spinning class music).

-if I want to purchase the song--purchase the song and have the rights management to rip it to a cd.

I tried Rhapsody.com but I don't have an mp3 player that's compatible with their free downloads.  (I'd have to purchase every song to put on my portable player).  I suppose I could download to the computer and then sync to my player, and still might try that, but rhapsody seemed clunky and I didn't like it very much.

So, basically, I'm looking for a site that is compatible with virutally almost all mp3 players that I can download all sorts of music temporarily.  I'm up for paying for a membership, but I'd really like to not go above $15 a month, because, like I said, I'd primarily be using this for a class, as I don't have tons of ambition to do a lot more with it.

If anyone can help me on this, I'd really appreciate it.
