so I went to the Johnny cash memorial at the Oasis in New Paltz tonight. My professor, HR Stoneback, was performing and me and a couple of kids from class decided to go. THe first hour was not so great...a couple of bad poems, a couple of good poems and a bad Johnny Cash cover group. Then my professor got up to perform. I have never been so amazed by a single individual in my life. He is unbelievable.
Sitting in his wheelchair, playing a custom made guitar and singing a melody of Johnny Cash songs I thought he was amazing...then he took out a poem that he had written about how Johnny had influenced him and had changed his life. I began to tear up. His stories intermingled with Cash's words and my professors hurt and anguish over his death was felt by everyone in the room. I felt lucky to be sitting in this small, strangly smelling bar listening to such an amazing man.
If that wasn't enough emotion, his friend got up after him and read a poem that he had written about my professor. The tears began again...this time not just by me, but my professor and everyone else around was crying too. It was an amazing experience and I am glad that i used up my last quarter tank of gas ans at through an hour of butt numbing mediocrity to get there and listen to the magnificent words of the most inspirational teacher that I have ever had.
