Two beautiful photos, with similarities and some stark differences
-Wars. Sailors. Uniformed service. Public kissing.
-Victory, spontaneity, strangers experiencing that together. Vs. -Ongoing war, homecoming, planning; and a relationship, chosen and consensual. Oh, and homosexual.
Consensual.
The V-J Day photo captures a man sexually assaulting a woman stranger, just one of a series of bystanders he grabbed, groped, and forcefully kissed that day- see the photographer's account. And you can see from the photo that it was forceful, as the nurse is bent over backwards. The war, the victory, the year, the era; can explain his actions, but not excuse them.
Society has changed, and for the better. War has not changed for the better.
