Hunger Games

SPOILERS for the end of the Hunger Games trilogy. And caution for my own rambling, still-raw and processing thoughts.

Into the burning ring of fire. )

I think that with Prim the point is that there isn't really one, almost? The whole thing is senseless death. Hundreds of kids died for no good reasons for years and years and I kind of think some of the deaths are just to drive home that "hey, senseless death happens." Finnick, for example- his death served NO purpose except to make me weep. But he dies, because people die, in Panem/the Games/the war. With Prim it's even worse, technically, because like you said, Katniss was trying to save her, that started the whole thing, and in the end, they ~won, but Prim wasn't safe. Lol maybe that's a really depressing.

OH GENDER ROLES FUN. I think it's so cool that like...Katniss is the ~boy~, she hunts, and provides, and fits more of the construction. Where Peeta is a baker. But it isn't a role reversal. I really think it's like...Panem isn't US, you know? They aren't operating in the same way, it's safe to think that a lot out gender roles have NEVER existed for these characters. So I don't think they're MEANT to be challenging it in that way. But Finnick, like. is the best for this omg. Because it's such a like...he's SO objectified, and used, and it's so much more reflective of women in our society than men. He's strong, but he's also this Capitol play thing. And like...Tina said earlier, Johanna is naked just as much as him, but no one cares, he's almost in the ~womanly position there. But he's not because what they're opposing for us, doesn't really exist as much in the books.

lol I am making no sense, and ten bucks Tina's comment is IDENTICAL to mine, but GO GO GO I ALWAYS HAVE MORE THOUGHTS.

Oooh yeah, I see what you and Tina mean about role reversals! I hadn't really considered how Katniss filled a role that we would see as masculine and Peeta had the more feminine role. But they are at the very least challenging us, even if they aren't challenging the people of Panem.

It IS really depressing! It seemed so undignified for Finnick to die in the sewers at the hands of the mutts, especially when he had survived two Games and had a mental breakdown. Surely he would have been more capable than many of the others who outlived him? But, like you said, it is supposed to be senseless death anyways.

And definitely! But it's not even a COMPLETE reversal, like KATNISS=MALE ROLE PEETA=FEMALE ROLE. Because they both have traits from both ends of the spectrum, which I think is really cool. And there's a huge lack of boy/girl tribute divide, which I think is cool too.

You know what the worst part of Finnick's death is? He got decapitated, by the mutts. (WHICH BTW ARE LIZARDS. MY BIGGEST FEAR. FML.) Annie, when she went crazy, it was because she saw her district partner decapitated. And I fucking HATE the throwaway line, about their baby. Like. You can't kill him and then throw that in there!

The senseless of both Prim and Finnick, with HOW both of them died-- Prim, at the end of the war that started in the first place because Katniss went in to save her, and Finnick decapitated by mutts when we know his wife went crazy in her Games after seeing a kid get decapitated, it's so deliberate and ruthless.

I'm still emotionally distraught over this book, haha.
