[new house smell] Rob & Julian

Sep 30, 2010 11:02

It was a lovely little house by anyone's standards: a respectably middle class red-brick semi-detached two-up-two-down that was only a few minutes from Oxford city centre. The neighbours on the attached side were students - three Oxford Brookes second years who spent most of their nights on the town rather than making any kind of effort in their ( Read more... )

Rob turned up at the house armed with a small, brand new suitcase half filled with clothes and photo album. He really did not look like a man about to move into a new house - more like someone who had spontaneously decided to be a tramp but didn't really know how to go about doing. How tragically middle class of me, he thought, sombrely, wondering how one becomes a tramp. He lingered on the doorstep nervously, fiddling with the key in his hands. So far he had not ruined or damaged the key, having visited the house a few times before, but actually moving himself into it was another matter entirely. It was a little daunting. It was a good thing he didn't own much. Since being completely cleared out of his own home he didn't buy much, deciding that it made considerably more sense to look into material goods when he was settled into the house ( ... )

On hearing the key in the door Julian twisted around and slowly sat up. He was still in the weary post-resuscitation phase where every movement was sluggish and clumsy as his limbs unstiffened and acclimatised to moving. Soon it would give way to restless pro-activity but for the next few minutes Julian didn't feel like moving too much.

He had wondered to himself whether there was something else behind Rob's hesitation to make the move to the new house. Whilst not easily offended Julian had struggled not to read something personal in to Rob's reluctance. After all, finding out about the existance of vampires and then moving in with one later that week had to be a bit... Daunting.

Finally summoning the mental fortitude to make himself move, Julian struggled to his feet and wandered to the living room door. He leaned heavily against the frame and ran a hand through his hair as he offered Rob a tired, wonky smile. "Evening! Finally bought all your stuff over then?"

If Rob had known how Julian felt about his delays, he would have done anything he could to make him think otherwise. Julian was an incredibly lovely person, there were no two ways about that. Rob had been overwhelmed by the mere thought that he was willing to spend time with him - willing to move in with him! Or have Rob move in with him, technically. The earnest energy that he put into everything was so new and refreshing. Rob simply didn't want to encroach upon this vitality. He didn't want to end up... hurting him or anything like that.

"That's right," he murmured, giving Julian a small smile. "Not like I have very much, though." He gestured vaguely at his suitcase. A little hesitant, he then continued, quietly and with a little embarrassment. "I'm sorry I took so long. Moving away from that place is a bit... unnerving. I'm too used to, well, being alone."

“S’fine, come in,” Julian waved a hand, gesturing for Rob to come in from the door. Already he could feel the life literally returning to his limbs, an odd sensation that he had never quite gotten used to in one hundred years. Julian stepped away from door frame with a hand extended Rob’s way. “Do you want, uh, a hand with that?”

“Oh, don’t worry about it.” His smile turned a little lopsided. “Did you choose which bedroom you wanted?” Glancing at the stairs, Rob took a moment to generally survey the house again. It really was a lovely place; he had to commend Julian for finding it. It certainly wasn’t the sort of place that Rob had ever imagined for himself, mostly because he had never considered the possibility of leaving his old apartment. How strangely life was starting to work out. Not only does he meet a vampire, but he moves in with him too. It was definitely a story for the grandkids.

“Oh, yeah, I did!” Julian leaped forward with a grin and started padding up the stairs barefoot. “Hope you don’t mind but I took the one on ( ... )
