Why I Love Montenegro #1

Jun 22, 2016 20:35

I don't post enough about how much I love Montenegro. I'm going to remedy that. Let's think of it as a belated anniversary gift - May 21st was the 10th anniversary of Montenegrin independence (or of the renewal of Montenegrin independence, depending on how you look at it).

#1: The dojč-kafa (or Deutsche-kafa). So named because, before Montenegro switched to the euro, this coffee cost one Deutschmark, it's an espresso lungo with foamed milk served in a six-ounce mug. To me, it's the perfect balance of milk and coffee. I've ordered lattes and cappuccinos, but after a dojč they are too milky and weak - there's no going back. It's the perfect drink for sipping in a cafe while you chat with your friends.

And you will find it only in Montenegro - go two hours north to Dubrovnik, ask for it in a Belgrade cafe, try explaining what it is to waiters in Tirana, but your request will be met only with looks of confusion. The closest you're going to find is a macchiato, but even then the balance is all wrong. In a region where several of the neighboring countries share almost everything in their language, cuisine and common history, the dojč has become shorthand for what is unique to Montenegro. They even have a sitcom named for it.
