the great clothes purge of 2016

I read the book http://www.amazon.com/The-Life-Changing-Magic-Tidying-Decluttering/dp/1607747308 this week which was a really easy read. This lady sounded so cute and a bit nuts for tidying, but I understood her ways, I think. So I decided to start with my clothes situation yesterday around 3pm. I grabbed every item of clothing I had in the house and lumped them in categories on my bed and floor (tops, bottoms, dresses, socks, underwear, swimwear, accessories, bags, shoes). Holy moly. My mind was racing for a good while. I knew which items I definitely didn't want to keep but some surprised me. To the best of my judgement I decided which clothes didn't "spark joy" in my life any longer. To be honest I kept some things that don't really anymore but I'm so used to wearing them that I can't part with them especially because they're the only items of clothing I have in that area. For example, the three jeans I've had for about 5 years now. They are a pain in my ass because they're always falling down my butt but I can't not have jeans right now. I will have to buy new ones before I get rid of them. But I did get rid of all my other jeans.

I put aside my faded band t-shirts and other clothes I deemed sentimental for when I go thru all my sentimental stuff, the last category of the book.

I got rid of more purses. I think there's about 7 purses and bags to my collection now. Last year there was like 20. I used to collect them and my favorite place to find them was at thrift stores. Leslie had given me a few when she moved in the summer. I threw them out because I have never used them. I finally tossed out the cute little coconut purse purchased in Hawaii in 2007 that I never used. I finally tossed the disgusting This Will Destroy You band tote bag and the butterfly tote Steph got me in 2004.

I learned how to properly fold my shirts in a way they're clearly visible to me when I open the drawer. I kept half of my dresses even the ones I don't fit into right now which I know is against the rules but they spark joy?! lol. I'm such a rebel. I threw out some of the tops I just purchased at Goodwill a month ago, learning my lesson that I need to stop shopping at the thrift store so much. I learned my lesson that I really just buy too much shit sometimes. And if I do go shopping, I need to literally discard a piece of clothing for each piece purchased. It's that simple.

I produced 4 white trash bags of clothes to donate and one more bag I had already filled up a couple months ago. One and a half bags of trashed clothes. Lucas felt inspired to get rid of some tops too, so he helped fill a bag. He refused to let me show him how to fold his shirts and instead propped them up in his drawers himself. He's adorably stubborn.

I actually still have some work to do. I could probably get rid of a couple more dresses. Oh my shoe collection has been dramatically reduced to about 6 or 7 pairs. Only one pair of sandals now. Ayeeeeeee. Ok picture time.
