The End Where I Begin

A/N: Welp, here goes. My first attempt at writing fanfiction. You can all thank the amazingness of Carly and Candy for getting me to finally bite the bullet and post something. Their prompt was "Damon and Elena's first REAL kiss from Elena's POV". I hope you both like it and any comments are appreciated! Sorry for any mistakes, I wrote this in the middle of the night because that's when my muse decided it wanted to work. Much love, Meg.

The End Where I Begin

“It makes you human, Elena.”

Caroline’s words echoed in Elena’s head as she made her way to the boarding house. The blonde vampire had been right, too, because surly only a human could be feeling the emotions she was experiencing all at once. This quite possibly could be the dumbest thing she’d ever done, and she had done more than her fair share of stupid things in her eighteen years on this planet. Parking behind the classic blue convertible Elena jumped out of the car and flew up the steps and into the foyer of the massive house. She didn’t stop until she found the man she was searching for standing near the fireplace with a glass of amber liquid in his hand.

“What is it now Elena?” Damon sighed in question without even turning to face the flushed brunette.

“I need to talk to you.”

“I’m really not in the mood for one of your speeches right now, so if you don’t mind...” Damon trailed off as he turned to face her hoping she’d take the hint and leave.

“Well, that’s just too damn bad because I’m saying what I came here to say and you’re going to listen.” Elena took several steps forward into the room until the couch was all that was separating them.

Damon raised a hand and motioned for her to continue talking.

“Caroline said something to me today...about you.” Elena began, but Damon interrupted her.

“Whatever she said I did, I didn’t. I’m sure I did something much worse.”

“God, do you ever just SHUT UP!?” Her voice rose in frustration.

Damon’s eyebrows raised at her outburst. “Whoa, who stole your candy?”

“Please, just let me say what I came here to say.” Elena’s brown eyes met his blue ones and she knew he wouldn’t be cutting in again. “Caroline said something to me about you today and I haven’t been able to get it out of my head since. She said I should just admit that I was attracted to you.” Damon’s head raised and his eyes locked on her face.

“I told her I couldn’t. That that would be wrong of me and I still think it is. But, the more I thought about it the more I realized that if I didn’t say something, if I kept living like this -- lying to everyone including myself, that would be even worse. I’m telling you this because I’m tired. I’m tired of pretending. I’m tired of walking around acting like I’m completely oblivious to the way I know you feel about me. And most importantly I’m tired because I feel the same way about you.” Elena finished her speech just in time because her voice was becoming so thick with emotion she didn’t think anyone, even a vampire, would be able to understand her.

Her eyes searched his face to try and read his reaction to her words, but the number of emotions flitting across his face were moving too quickly. Before she could ask him to say something he was in front of her, moving around the couch and crowding her personal space faster than her eyes could track.

“Do you have any idea what you’re saying right now?” His voice came out almost strangled and the thin veins around his eyes darkened showing off his vampire visage. When she didn’t respond immediately he asked her again, his voice raised. “Do you?!”

Slowly Elena raised her hand to his cheek like you would approach a scared horse. “I’m not afraid of you Damon, but I’m afraid of what I’ll be without you.” And with that she stood on her toes and pressed her lips to his. For several seconds he didn’t move, didn’t respond at all but when she whispered the words, “I love you Damon” against his lips he became a man possessed. His hands came up to cup either side of her face and he pulled her closer to him, their bodies melding together. Tongues and teeth met as they fought for dominance. Months of pent up sexual tension was being let go in this one kiss and Elena thought she might just die from the feelings he was evoking inside her.

Finally they pulled apart, both of their breathing ragged.

“Say it again.”

Elena didn’t have to ask what he meant. “I love you Damon. I love you even when I want to hate you. You make me feel more when I’m with you than anyone else and I’m sorry for taking so long to admit that.” Her hands rested on his chest, over his heart that she knew belonged to her.

“Well, that’s good, because I love you too.” And the look in his perfect blue eyes made Elena recognize that she had been wrong. Humans weren’t the only thing that could feel a thousand different emotions at once...vampires could too.
