Last night, the roommates and I went to see a well-known Beatles tribute band called "Instant Karma" in Mount Prospect. It was so much fun! We cruised through the carnival stoned and made our way toward the stage, only to sit down a rickety red picnic table and observe the strange crowd--an old man (probably in his 70's) in a baby blue baseball cap rockin' out as hard as he could, a balding woman in a wheelchair whose remaining hair is like Bozo the Clown, an adorable couple (probably in their 70's as well) jitterbugging. Tony said he felt like we were placed into a 1985 movie set.
Although we felt out of place with our urban lifestyles and culturally diverse group, we just rocked out with all of them. A few pitches of beer, one funnel cake, three cups of salted peanuts later, we're shout-singing along to the Jackson 5's "I'll Be There" in respect for Michael Jackson's passing. Instant Karma played more of the Beatles' 50's songs and covers more than any of their other stuff. As soon as they started up "Mr.Postman" I went nuts.
I thought about my dad and my aunt a lot while I was there. I mostly tried to connect where we were, what we were experiencing with my past life. I still can't quite figure out how I grew up in the box that is San Jose for most of my life, then came here to experience a simple, absurd pleasure. A few days ago, my aunt and I were discussing Michael Jackson's death and she actually compared him to the Beatles! Hearing the names "Paul McCartney" and "John Lennon" come out of her mouth seemed even more foreign than when she suddenly switches to Vietnamese in the middle of our conversations. My dad also brought them up in an email, saying they were a great band, but I've never heard him listen to them, hence my Beatles ignorance. I just kept wondering how I've gone through most of my life without realizing that the Beatles exist (up until a few years ago).
10 minutes before the show ended, we walked back to our cars and hung out a little. I peed behind a car, which was almost fun because I hadn't peed outside in awhile. I hadn't gone to a carnival, the suburbs, or a show in awhile either.
Now I'm on a Beatles kick.
