"good morning buttercup"

So about ten minutes ago, I experienced something so simple but so heartwarming.

First of all, last week Sam came into my room midday announcing that her morning started off amazing. My friends and I asked why, and she explained how she woke up really early that morning and had to go to the bathroom. She's about fifteen feet from the girls' bathroom and on her way there, she walked by this kid named Phil. Phil used to have long curly red hair that he'd wear down and all flowy and shit. But now it's short and he looks more like a guy and it's really cute. He wears Berkenstocks all year round, tight-ish pants, has never drank, is ridiculously intelligent, and taught himself how to play the guitar. Oh, and on Sundays, not that I stalk him, you can always see him running around with a little toddler all over campus. He's pretty much the greatest person ever.

ANYWAYS. So Sam says that she walks out of her room and is all delirious and passes Phil. She makes eye contact with him and he simply goes, "Good morning, Buttercup."

Of course I'm jealous that someone called her buttercup in the wee hours of the morning, but it just sounded so pleasant to have someone greet someone like that. Not just a, "mornin'" or "hey," but a proper greeting with a cute term of endearment attached. It made me really happy knowing that people like that still exist.

So background of my day so far: It's 11am, I woke up at 8:30 for my 9am DISCUSSION class which ended up being only about five minutes long because our TA is sickish and it's our last discussion and no one had anything to talk about, nor do we ever have anything to talk about at 9am on a Monday morning... I come back, work on a paper, then go to my Stats class. I'm dragging my feet up the stairs, it's cold and gross out, my body's aching just from being dragged out of bed to go to a pointless class... Gah. But I'm in front of my friend's door, saying bye before I continue walking all the way down to the end of the hall to get a dollar, just to walk all the way back to the front entrance of our building to buy a DC to get some caffeine in my body so I can focus on the rest of my paper. Out of the corner of my eye I see this kid (who shall remain nameless) walking with one of his friends. Ummm we'll call him... Muffin. Just for the hell of it.

Muffin and I have been friends since the beginning-ish of the year. He's friends with other people on the floor but always says hi to us with a big hug and smile and asks how we're doing, etc etc. He's really cute and I kind of have always had a crush on him, but that's besides the point.

Lately I haven't seen him much, so to be honest, I was kind of hesitant to walk past him, just in order to avoid an awkward "hey whats up" half looking down at the ground. You know how it is. But whatever, so I walk past him and the girl and he looks at me (full blown amazing eye contact,) gives me a really genuine smile, and says in a solid voice, "Good morning Aimee."

So I know, he didn't call me buttercup. And it wasn't 7am. But it really did make me really happy. It... was just really nice. And it was something so silly and stupid and simple, which makes it all a little bit better. Seriously, say good morning and mean it sometime. It might make someone's day.
