Picture Prompt Her sweet Babboo had proposed...finally! Sally couldn't stop herself from telling people. All day at the hospital, she was sharing the good news...no matter that the proposal had occured several weeks ago.
All the nurses had taken to rolling their eyes whenever Sally came into the vicinity...more than usual, but the babies were happy to listen. As she carefully changed a tiny three pound boy and checked his vitals, she spoke softly to him.
"There's so much to do," she said in a warm, happy voice. "We've got until October, but we have to get fittings, a blood test and a license, flowers, cake...there's so much." She placed her finger against the baby's tiny hand and smiled as little fingers tried to grip it. "Yes...it's exciting, isn't it? My Babboo wants to get married on Halloween. It's a special day for us."
The baby hiccuped a bit and Sally moved her other fingers to run soothingly over the baby's chest. "Mm hmm. I think so, too."
A noise behind her caught her attention and she saw the baby's mother standing in the hallway, a hospital gown hanging loosly over her frame. The woman's face was tired and hopeful, and Sally smiled at her and waved at her to come in.
The woman peeked her head inside the doorway and bit her lip. "Is it okay...I mean, they said he'd be vulnerable to germs."
"Just wash your hands...he's small, but his vitals are very strong. I checked with Dr. Roman when he did your son's check-up this morning, and he's looking just wonderful." Sally waited while the woman washed her hands and showed her how the baby would grip at a finger...how his toes would spread out if you ran a finger across his foot, as opposed to curling in like an adults'. "You see? All very normal responses. And touch is good. Babies respond to it, and it's been shown that it actually helps them in their development. Talking is good too."
As the woman moved into the place she had been standing, Sally went to move one of the more comfortable chairs over so the new mommy could sit down while she spent some time with her son.
She watched the woman's face as she interacted with the baby and grinned before turning to a newborn girl in a warming compartment. "Hello," she murmured softly, "did you know that I'm getting married?" There was always someone to talk to in the nursery.
