On the Way
"I don't know if I believe in happy couples anymore," Danielle said and fell loosely into a chair across from where Lydia sat.
"I do," Lydia twisted her fingers, "certainly not perfect and happy, but at least happy." Danielle shrugged and shook her head. "You're not happy?"
Danielle bit her lip. "No, I'm happy, but it feels like it's fake; like something disguised as happiness."
"Like what?"
"I'm not sure. Contentment?"
Lydia's eyebrows rose and she nodded her head. "Possible. Don't know if that means there's no hope for all couples though."
"Are you happy?"
There was a silence in which Lydia focused solely on one spot on the floor.
"I'm content." Danielle nodded, admiring the honesty she'd gotten. Of the many couples she knew, Lydia and Jeff had one of the strongest, by far.
"I always pegged you as being happy," she smirked and shook her head.
Lydia smiled, nodding. "I think I'm pretty close. But I won't say anything I'm not positive on. I'm sure there’s some things holding it back but I try not to let them take control." She grinned as a moment of silence passed and they sat thinking.
"You know who I think might be happy?" Danielle lifted her head with interest and Lydia's smiled brightened. "Patrick and Sebastien."
Danielle smiled and laughed to herself. "You think so? No disrespect to either of them, I love them completely but it was something of a shock when I first found out. I'm not sure but, the two of them always seemed like complete opposites to me. And seeing Patrick with someone entirely came as a shock, I guess."
"Really?"
"Yeah," she hesitated, obvious thought running through her head. "I suppose just since Sarah, I didn't expect Patrick to ever genuinely smile again. It's almost unreal when I see him with Sebastien now."
"I know what you mean," Lydia agreed. "He went through a lot when she left him. But he seems fine now. And you can brush those thoughts of complete opposites away. They seem to get along just fine all of the time."
Danielle smirked, "What's that supposed to mean?"
Lydia laughed, "It means that when I visited the boys that time they played a show nearby and you were away with your mother when she was sick, they had a bus call early the next morning and I was with Jeff and the boys the whole night and the whole night, Patrick and Sebastien were getting along very well."
"Oh, my," Danielle's hand rose to cover her mouth and she slipped into a fit of laughter, soon joined by Lydia. "That's disturbing and so many other things all at once."
Lydia shook her head, "You're telling me. I swear I never thought either of them would make that much noise."
Danielle could only laugh harder and shook her head. "That was something I didn't need to know."
"I didn't need to know it either but if the chance arises to share my unwanted knowledge..." Lydia explained easily.
"And what unwanted knowledge would this be?" The girls both settled down and watched as Jeff walked into the room and perched himself on the arm of the chair Lydia sat in.
"About how loud Patrick and Sebastien can get," Danielle snickered.
"Oh, don't remind me," Jeff rolled his eyes. "I have to live with them for months at a time. Believe me, I know."
"What on Earth do you know, Jeff?" This time all eyes in the room landed on Patrick as he walked through carrying a box. He headed for the corner and placed it down.
Jeff shook his head. "I was just assuring the girls that I know just how loud you and Sebastien get."
Patrick shrugged and flashed a large smirk, clearly proud of the conversation. "Well, you know, if you were taking part in the best sex you've ever had, you'd be loud too."
"But you two are always loud," Jeff protested.
"Yes," Patrick's grin grew smug, "and every time it just gets better." At that he turned and walked out of the room, tossing a wave over his shoulder.
Jeff shook his head and made a disgusted sound. "I'll have nightmares now. What were you two talking about them for, anyway?"
Danielle smiled and straightened her posture. "Just saying how they seem so happy together."
Jeff smiled, looking out the doorway Patrick had disappeared through. "Yeah, hardly thought I'd see that again. Not from Patrick, at least."
"That's what Dani said," Lydia smiled and followed Jeff's gaze out the door.
"It's true," he agreed. "After all that he was up to I half expected him to drop and have to stop working for us altogether."
"Was it really that bad?" Lydia asked with a cocked eyebrow. Jeff had his lips pursed and he nodded his head. "What went on?"
He swallowed deeply and rubbed his hand over the back of his head. "Well, he was fine, really happy up until what happened with Sarah. I don't actually know why she left, but it was definitely not Patrick's choice. After Sarah dropped him he, like, fell into a hole," Jeff began, shaking his head and sighing. "He was completely wasting himself; he did get a new girlfriend but he cheated on her all the time, probably because he didn't love her; I think she was more of a rebound from Sarah."
"Then one night he was out and David and Sebastien went to look for him," he continued, his hand raising to stroke his chin. "They brought him back saying they found him at some bar down the road from where we were staying. When I went to sleep, Patrick was tossing and Sebastien was in the bathroom on detail of making sure he didn't pass out and hit his head on the bowl."
A voice cleared from the behind him and Jeff froze as the girls looked on. Patrick stood in the doorway with an ashamed look on his face and his arms folded across his chest.
"Actually, I made it to my bed before I passed out." Jeff turned around to face Patrick and nodded apologetically. Patrick took a deep breath and sighed. "When I woke up, Sebastien was asleep in a chair he'd pulled up next to the bed." He nudged a box that sat at his feet and calmly turned back down the hallway.
Jeff inhaled deeply, nervously, and stood off of the arm of the chair. He picked up Lydia's hand which had at some point found it's way into his and kissed the back of it. "I'll go find him and talk with him, I guess; then I'm turning in," he shook his head. "Next time you girls want a story, remind me to lock the door."
The girls chortled as he leaned over and kissed Lydia's cheek. "Bon soir," he said before leaning down and whispering something into her ear and she looked down, trying to mask the large smile playing at her lips with a small one. After Jeff had walked out of the room, she looked back to Danielle and nodded.
"I think I'm working up to happy."
