Big Bang 2009 Author's Notes - Web Sites I used

I'm a stickler for as much detail as will give the story a sense of reality. What I think is weird is that sometimes, I'll make something up, and then go look it up out of curiosity, only to find out I was pretty much on the money. Serendipity? Or an obsession about thus and such subject to the point where I'm picking up stuff I'm not even aware of? I don't know, and maybe it doesn't matter.

Here are the websites I went to for research:

For amnesia, I went to Wikipedia, mostly because that's what popped up first, and second because it's entirely readable. Other sites were a lot of psychological mumbo jumbo of no use to a writer who just wants to get a sense of the subject.

As I read portions of the site, I decided that Sam and Dean might suffer either from retrograde amnesia, which is amnesia where someone can't recall events that occurred before the development of the amnesia. This was mostly Sam, obviously.

The other type was psychogenic amnesia, which sounds to me like a form of more intense retrograde amnesia. The description includes "Situation-specific amnesia is a type of dissociative amnesia that occurs as a result of a severely stressful event, as in post-traumatic stress disorder. Dissociative amnesia is due to psychological rather than physiological causes and can sometimes be helped by therapy"

The key for me was the idea that what Sam and Dean had gone through could be helped by therapy. Partly because I didn't want to do any permanent damage, and also because for a Winchester, any kind of therapy would be VERY trying and difficult. And pretty much the worst torture you can imagine, sharing your feelings and all that.

I went a little overboard, of course, and found this psych website that gave me exact names of diseases, and how doctors plot elements of someone's conditions and give them an Axis rating. I spent a fun time there, but oddly, none of this ever actually enters the story!

And then there was art therapy! Oh, man, this one was Amalthia's idea, and I ran with it like I was on fire. Since I was obsessed with chalk, I was so gratified to know that at least this type of art therapy seemed to encourage the use of chalk.

Here's the wiki one, of course, full of good, general information:

Here are two companies that seem to make money at this:

And then this one, such a find and a treasure, because it was PERFECT. Miss Windle must have studied this like crazy!  This is the HTP theory, the House-Tree-Person thing Miss Windle applies. Only not very well, because she keeps upsetting Sam! And that makes Dean MAD!
