kids with cameras
we watched this documentary called born into brothels today in our anthropology class. it is sooo interesting, and completely heartbreaking. the story focuses on these kids who grew up in a brothel in calcutta, when this woman named zana briski was doing a project on prostitutes in calcutta's red light district. she got really close to the kids (she lived there for years) and gave them each a camera, as well as photography lessons. zana had such a personal connection with these kids that she tried (and somewhat succeeded, although many left) to get them into schools, and one of them actually flew to amsterdam for the world press photo foundation as a part of their children's jury.
