The Secret World of Arrietty dub
So, I finally got around to watching this film...and because I didn't feel like waiting for the formal release on DVD, I went to the theater. I figured it was going to be dubbed, but I also figured that since it was Disney, and they didn't really f**k up other Ghibli movie dubs I had seen, it couldn't be that bad.
But it can. The voices of the characters themselves weren't bad. In fact, I think Disney seeks the same type of voice for the main male protagonist. But they set dubs as a whole back like 10-15 years. Seriously? Changing the names? Honestly, when I heard the names, I kind of thought it was just because the source material was by an English author, but then I looked it up when I got home and it annoyed me.
The conspiracy theorist in me thinks it's because it wasn't a Miyazaki-directed film so there wouldn't be that much protest from many other than purists/people-like-me-who-aren't-fanatical-purists-but-don't-really-like-name-changes.
