I've started working at a dance studio here in DC, at the front desk. Yesterday, a 9-year-old boy named Will came into the studio for his tap class. There were a couple other kids there signing in, and we were making conversation with them by asking if they had the day off from school. Some kids said yes, some said no. But Will said "No, I didn't get the day off, so I couldn't celebrate someone coming to this country and cutting off people's hands and giving them diseases."
Everyone was dead silence for a couple seconds.
And then all of the staff started high-fiveing him.
I didn't really start to learn the information this 9-year-old already has until I was a freshman in college. And if that's the way education is going...well, I'm feeling good about the future.
