"I'm sure she's fine!" Amelia rushed to reasure him. Absentmindly he nodded and moved over to the couch, falling into the soft fabic of it. She rushed over to sit with him, to be close.
"She was good you know," he sighed. Just so soon after he had lost Kelsey, Raylenne was gone too. It was almost funny, in a saddening way. Amelia looked up at him with her warm eyes and he thanked the world he still had that tiny angel. He wouldn't - not in a million years - lose her or let harm come to her.
Through the window he could see the stars and darkness. With a large amount of effort he pulled himself up from the couch and held out a hand. "Bedtime, angel." Black locks moved as she shook her head no. "I'll stay up and wait with you. She can't be too long, right?" Instead of answering, he picked her up and plopped her right down onto her bed.
"Don't worry, she'll come back. I know she will." And seeing the hope in her face, he thought maybe, just maybe, she was right. "I'm not tired anywhere," she smiled as if it were a fact to be proud of.
It wasn't long until she was passed out, pajamas abandoned for the serenity of the land of the dreams. She didn't deserve to be thrown into the mess of the world.
Aiden pulled the blanket up to her chin as she smiled in her sleep, tiny hands spread out on the bedsheets.
He situatited himself on the edge of the couch, feeling as if the weight of the world rested on his shoulders. It didn't, of course. Just of society and all that was right. Unable to sleep, he stayed all night in that position. Just thinking.
And when morning came, so did Raylenne with her red ponytail.
He ran to her and scooped her up in a hug, holding her close. "Oh for goshness sakes, I wasn't gone that long!" She laughed, hugging him back. He stepped back and studied her more closely. "It was a whole night."
"Well I didn't realize it was that long," she laughed nervously, avoiding his eyes. Amelia ran up to them but stopped as she saw Raylenne closer. "Hi."
"Where'd you get this necklace?" Aiden asked, reaching for the purple four leaf clover. "No where!" She yelped, jumping back from his reach. "That's real Amethyst!" Raylenne murmered something about not wanting to talk about it and walked over to the couch.
"Amelia, go try on the outfit I got you. It's in the dresser. Then come show Raylenne and I, okay? I have a suprise for you." Like any child's face would, hers shone with excitement at the idea of a suprise. She ran to do just as he told as settled onto the couch.
She ran out in her new pink dress and leather jacket, looking adorable as can be. "Great!" He smiled, standing up. "Now I just have to spiffy myself up and you'll be ready for school." Neighbour hood dogs would never get that squeal out their mind for 20 years.
"Are you sure they'll like me? Are you really sure?" Amelia asked, unable to stand still with all the excitment. "Yes, they'll like you." He smiled, playing with the cuffs on his pressed white shirt. Pressed. How uncomfortable after years of t-shirts that would last him, no matter how dirty. And the darn belt felt as if it were strangling his hips.
In the cab, he kept his eyes on the driver. If that guy so much as dared look at a cell phone, they were gone. The few times he'd been to town in his life, he'd seen posters of his face dotted around and their numbers just continued to grow. Amelia stared out the window every second, laughing whenever she saw something that slightly amused her.
Finally they reached their destenation, the only thing he wanted that his father would never allow. The doors themselves were overpowering, with their largeness. "Let's go!" Amelia cried, tugging at his arm.
"You must be Mr. Greene and Amelia! Please, come in!" The principal gestured to two open chairs in front of her desk. Aiden eyed her warily, noting every fact about her. The clean look of her outfit to the messy bun on her head.
"It's wonderful to meet you in person Mr. Greene. And you too, Amelia. I've heard wonderful things about you." She used to her hands to talk a lot. Another note to add.
"You told her good things about me? Really?" He laughed that she sounded suprised. He only told the truth about his brilliant little girl.
"Now it's just down to the payment, Mr. Greene. Amelia, dear, you can go off to you're first classes. My recponisit will give you your schedule."
Amelia stood from her chair and reached for Aiden's hand. "It's okay, no one's going to hurt you. I will be here at the end of the day to pick you up. Promise." He assured her. With a hesitant smile, she set off into the new world of school, glancing over her shoulder to make sure Aiden was still there.
"As for you, you disgusting rat..." The principal's face twisted in disgust as she pushed back from the desk and the man. "We're ready to take your payment, Mr. Aiden."
At the sound of his name he pushed back his chair and got ready to bolt out the door after Amelia. Instead he found himself looking at the face of a murderer. "Thank you, Marie." He nodded at the principal behind the desk.
Aiden barreled his way through. Or at least attempted today. The man caught him by the arm and smacked him across the face, pushing him down onto the floor.
He lay sprawled out on the floor, staring at the wood of the wall and trying to keep his eyes open. It was no use, blackness still engulfed him.
"Mr. Aiden. One of the most looked for villians of all time. Tell me, any last words before I kill you?"
"Bite. My. Ass." Aiden growled.
With a knife, the man ripped open the buttons on his crisp white shirt and showing his bare chest. "Like what you see?' Aiden taunted him. The back of the man's hand came down on the side of Aiden's face. Hard.
Aiden twisted with the foce of the slap, holding his cheek and spitting ot sme blood. "You can tortue me all you want. I won't tell you anything." The man just smiled and left him. Alone.
"He promised he would be here..." Amelia held back tears at her father's lies. Mrs. Yeild held her hand out to the girl and smiled kindly. "It's okay dear, we'll find you somewhere to go."
