Euan's cold had reached a climax, and all he could think about was reaching another climax of his own. His nose wouldn't stop running, he was only just hanging onto his voice by a thread, even if it was scratchy and hoarse, he was sneezing and coughing, his eyes were red and stingy, and he was now surrounded by a pile of cold and flu things that Vee and the other copper had collected from a pharmacy on their trip into the city. Everything from countless boxes of Kleenex to flu pills to cough syrup to throat lozenges to Vitamin C pills to Vicks Vaporub to Chapstick to antiseptic wipes. Way to make Euan feel like he had just contracted an aggressive form of herpes. "Why didn't you just put me in a bubble? London's own bubble boy?" he asked, looking sceptically at the throat lozenges. Apple and menthol sounded like it would make him barf.
This time, he was rugged up and felt like he was unable to stop shivering. Track pants, three pairs of socks, two jumpers and a scarf with a blanket wrapped around his legs didn't seem to be doing enough. It was just him and Vee home, Matt ducking out to drop in on his partner for a few hours at the tail end of Christmas. Euan kept getting the feeling like she was trying to say something, but unless she just spat it out, what was he supposed to do?
"It's much more fun when you're not shivering, and sick, and can just be naked in the bubble like a go-go dancer," Vee responded with a slight smirk. She had tried not to hover, but when it was clear Euan was ill, she wanted to do as much as she could to make sure he would get better. It was her fault he was here. Her fault he'd gotten on a plane with germ-infested air conditioning. This was her way of making it up to him, even if she had gone a little crazy.
She sat down beside him on the sofa, Euan having made the effort to at least not be in bed anymore. He'd made it through breakfast, but after it he'd taken a definite turn for the worse. Vee started to bite her fingernail, and looked at him. "Who was she?"
Euan shot her a smirk, amused that she finally did spit it out. "The Avon lady," he replied smoothly and opened up one of the lozenges to give it a tentative sniff. He looked over at her, raising an eyebrow. "How do you know it was even anyone? I'm Irish, my family lives here. I might have called in a favour from a friend, took advantage of having the place to myself, a bit of a pick-me-up." He knew Vee, and he knew this was probably eating her up a little. It was one thing for her to be bonking a fresh lay, but she did still need to know where Euan's radar was pointing. It was some sort of ownership thing, and probably why Euan got the shits when she dropped everything to come to England without warning.
Vee arched her eyebrow at him. "Family? You fuck your family?" She snorted. "I know you're Irish, but c'mon. You're not that backwards. No one with your looks is an inbred. And Matt doesn't bloody have an Avon lady, so try again." It was true that it was eating her up, and she hated it. She knew it wasn't fair still feeling a sense of possessiveness but she couldn't help herself. She needed to know what Euan was up to if for no other reason than to make sure he was at least safe. "Who was she?" Vee asked again.
Euan gave her a bland look. "I said friend. Stop the selective hearing, it shits me when you do that. I might have called in a favour from a friend.. You know, because I lived here in Ireland a lot longer than I have in New York. My family were here in this fucking city visiting family when they got blown into a million pieces. Aye, see? Friend. Family has friends. Following me, or do I need to write on cue cards?" He put the lozenges aside. No way was he putting them in his mouth. "A friend." He just didn't elaborate on who's friend.
Vee stopped chewing on her nail, and tucked her hands in her lap as she huffed out a breath. "Sorry," she mumbled. "A friend... Got it." She sat there quietly for a minute before opening her mouth again. "Did you have fun with the friend?"
"Aye, it was nice. Don't see you offering to fuck me anymore," Euan couldn't help but add. He started coughing again and pulled some tissues from the box to wipe his nose. "Felt like crap after it, but it was worth it. She had really nice tits."
Vee cleared her throat, and raised her hand to rub her fingers against her forehead. "Do you want me to?" She glanced at him. "What if we had kept fucking? And what if I'd had this change of heart with you? Would you have even considered dating me? I'm glad it was worth it, and I'm glad she had nice tits. Are you going to see your friend again?"
Euan just laughed, even if it caused him to sneeze. He threw her a look. "Virginia Stewart spewing out the what-ifs. The world must be ending. When the Apocalypse hits, let me know and I'll take a couple of Valium to sleep through it. Quit with the prick teasing, too. You aren't gonna fuck me with Dudley Do-Right on the go." He flipped her off and blew his nose again. "Nope, I'm not. Too many external factors."
"External factors?" Vee rubbed her nose with her middle finger as a subtle flip-off before she started laughing as well. "I'll give you the Valium myself. And quit with the whole woe-is-me-you-won't-fuck-me bullshit. You don't need to throw that in my face." She reached out to brush her fingers through his hair. "And external factors mean you thought about it."
Euan was shivering again and he watched her for a few moments. "Just stating facts, love. I'm not throwing anything in your face. If I was pining, I would hardly be fucking other chicks, would I?" He tugged the hoodie tighter around himself and pulled the hood up over his head, or at least half over his head. It was a half-hearted attempt, anyway. "Why wouldn't I think about it? It was a fucking awesome fuck. Of course I want to do her again."
Vee grinned. "I would so love to see you pining for someone... I bet it'd be something." She rubbed her hand against his arm and shifted a little closer to help keep him warm. "Since when have external factors ever stopped you fucking someone before? Fucking awesome sex shouldn't be... sneezed at."
"Ain't gonna happen," Euan snorted, and nearly choked himself, breaking into another coughing fit. This is what he got for smoking. Colds were always worse when he did rarely get them. "I didn't say they were my external factors, they're hers. I'm not gonna drag her here and rape her for another fuck. Not everyone wants to deal with international fucking complications."
"So what are her factors?" Vee was trying not to pry, but it wasn't easy. Not when he kept throwing her little tidbits that just made her want to know more. She rubbed his chest, watching him with concern. "I didn't say you needed to rape her. But maybe a bit more fun would be good for you. Or maybe it would just kill you."
Euan smirked, and tucked his hands under his arms in a self-hug. "What a way to fucking die, though," he commented, whistling in appreciation. "Nice arse, too. Bad break up, she worries what her friends think. Not my problem. And come on, I'm not falling into your trap. I'm going home soon, and she lives here. No fucking way. I can get pussy in New York."
"But can you really?" Vee asked, seizing her moment. "Pussy that you would happily die buried in, with nice tits, and a nice arse? When did you last have all that, U? And don't feed me the bullshit about your new partner. What's wrong with a little fling if you both know where you stand? Help her over the bad break-up to fuck with her friends. She can help you with being here. A consolation for coming to London."
Euan remained quiet. Fucking Vee was the last time was when he last had it, but he wasn't going to offer that information up. It pissed him off she had moved on to something she thought was better than him. He wouldn't admit to being hurt, but it did piss him off. He thought they had a good thing, then she was telling him she was falling for some bloke in another country, of all places. "What if she does a you?" he finally asked and then shook his head.
"What do you mean?" Vee was quiet, like she was worried if she asked too much he'd shut down. She still wasn't sure if at least one of her hunches was right. She'd spend her life making it up to Euan for dumping him cold for Matt. Even if they hadn't been together officially. They'd been everything else.
"She goes mental, sees it as more than a couple of bonks and a cheers muchly?" Euan started to sneeze again and by the time he was finished, his nose was running and his eyes watering. He peeled more tissues from the box to take care of the snot. "I'm not him."
"No one's saying you are. And maybe she won't be me. Maybe she'll have her head screwed on straight. Both of us saw it as more than a couple bonks. I wouldn't be here if it was one-sided, U," Vee explained as she reached out to get him some of the cold and flu medicine.
Euan shook his head. "Don't fucking laugh, but I feel too sick for more than one bonk," he mumbled.
Vee bit down on her lip, trying not to laugh like he wanted. Only a grin escaped, and she leaned in to kiss his temple. "I love you."
Euan gave her a nudge. "Shut up, it's not even funny," he said crankily as he wiped his nose again. "This is the worst holiday ever."
Vee stuck her lip out in a pout. "Don't say that, U. That really hurts my feelings. Just when I was sure the pissing contest was finally over."
Euan snorted and picked up the packet of lozenges to hold it against his cheeks. He was starting to get hot again. In fact, he kicked the blanket off and started to peel off all the layers. "I'm being fucking honest. This bites. Stuck in this friggen place while you make schmoopy eyes at the bloke and hearing you fucking making out when I'm in the bathroom taking a crap. Why am I here again? Seriously. Why am I here?"
"Because you're my best friend, and I at least wanted to spend Christmas with you." Vee got up to go and get some ice cubes and a cloth, and brought them back for Euan as she sat on the coffee table in front of him. "And so you could understand why I'm here, but I guess it is all just schmoopy eyes to you. I'm sorry. I'm sorry for leaving you without much of a word. I'm sorry if you feel like you've been replaced when you haven't. I'm sorry you think I've abandoned you." Vee reached out to rest the cloth on his forehead. "No one could ever replace you. Matt's just a different part of my life. A third piece of the puzzle. You'll always be the second."
"Puzzles don't fit together in different countries." Euan toed all the pairs of socks off and after another brief contemplation, the track pants went and he was back down to just his boxers. Ironically, he was in exactly the same position when Gee had been riding him, but he thought that was probably a piece of info Vee wouldn't appreciate. He also didn't tell her he was counting the days til he could go home. He had tried twice to venture out the front of the apartment block to face his demons, both times he just felt claustrophobic and nauseous. He was going to need some sort of therapy to get over it, and no doubt any shrink would just tell him he needs to come here to get over it. He fucking hated doctors. He groaned and shook his head slightly. "Stop apologising. I'm over it. It's not you. Everything's changed and the sooner we deal with that, the better."
"Then see her again. Maybe even just so it's her that's mopping your brow, and you don't have to focus on me and Matt making schmoopy eyes. Maybe she can even... take you out," Vee tried to suggest gently. It was hard to miss his reluctance to get out of the apartment, even if she understood why.
Euan shifted restlessly. "I don't wanna go out. Why go out if you're all advocate for the just sex thing? My head might be full of snot, but it still works." He swiped his hand over his face to brushed away the sheen of sweat that had appeared. "Besides, Supercop won't be happy."
"You could just go to her place and have sex, that's going out as well." Vee frowned a little. "Why won't Supercop be happy?"
"I'm sick," Euan had to point out again with emphasis. "Even my cock hurts. I don't wanna go out. I'll stick around here til it's time to go home, and then I'm out of here. Because when I said friend, I meant his friend. A chick called Gee, fellow copper. She came with soup and I came with my face buried in her tits."
"Gee?" Vee's eyebrows shot up. The brunette that she'd thought had fucked Matt. Only they really were just friends. "Wait, the woman I sent you a picture of?"
Euan shrugged. "Aye, sure. Not that I can remember that, it was fucking ages ago. I'm not a fucking USB drive, you know. Maybe he knows more than one Gee. The Vee Gee thing is already screwing with my fucking head, anyway."
Virginia pulled back a little, her elbows resting on her knees as she watched him. "And you won't fuck her again because she's Matt's friend?"
Euan scratched his head. "I need a fucking smoke," he decided. "Maybe a joint. A joint would be good. No, she won't fuck me again because she's Matt's friend. Matt, is that his name? Right. I do remember, sort of. Not like he and I have bonded over Oprah or anything."
"Did she say she wouldn't fuck you again because she was Matt's friend?" Vee pulled her lips to the side. "Wish I could help you with the joint, but I have yet to find out the drug connections here."
Euan's head was starting to pound again, and he decided he was over the conversation anyway. And over the interrogation. "Pretty much," he said flippantly and shifted to curl up in a ball on the sofa. "No waking me for late night noogie, either. I need my beauty sleep," he joked, letting his eyes fall closed.
Vee rubbed his leg affectionately before she stood up and kissed his temple. "Sweet dirty dreams, U," she whispered. Her mind wasn't going to shut down. Not now the interrogation had given her a lot of information. She had no idea if Matt was aware of Gee sleeping with Euan, or not. She wasn't even sure Euan had realised he'd told Vee who the 'friend' was. For all she knew he was hopped up on cold meds. She had that look of determination in her eye like she was close to catching a suspect, ticking over ways to get Gee and Euan together without it seeming like a set up. Euan would baulk, and he genuinely wouldn't fuck the brunette again. Vee wasn't even so sure she was aiming for a repeat on the sex anyway. Euan first needed to understand that comfort wasn't the evil thing he assumed it to be, and he wasn't going to lose his balls if a woman snuggled him while he was sick.
