Remember that SPJ Mark of Excellence Award thing? I entered the reporting I did for the Katrina blog in it. I never mentioned it again, specifically because Stefanie and I didn't fully read the requirements and didn't submit three copies of our entry form. According to the website, all incomplete entires would be disregarded. To add insult to injury, they would still cash my $18 check for the entry fee. I was disappointed, to say the least. But after a while I forgot about it. There was nothing I could do anyways.
Today, I was curled up in bed, reading a very good book I just bought from the bookstore. I'd been invited to a wine & cheese party, but I had every intention of staying where I was for a very long time--wine & cheese or not. I was startled when my phone buzzed on the nightstand. I thought immediately that it was my mom and considered not answering it. Well, I looked at the caller ID and saw Stefanie's name. Odd... But she was probably calling to ask if I was going to the party tonight (It is a convergence one, after all).
The first words I heard were, "We're award winning journalists."
I thought she was kidding. Until minutes later, an email appeared in my inbox.
We placed. Lord only knows how, but we did. And the more I think about it, the more I think its just an honorable mention since we didn't turn in a completed entry. But none the less, we placed. We won't find out for over a month what place we made, at the Region 7 conference from April 7-8 in St. Louis. If in the unlikely event that we placed first; we would advance to nationals in Chicago.
I now must blow dry my hair. I have a wine and cheese to attend, after all.
