As far back as Marco Polo she was inaugurating the grand companion institution of "intense bonding with a girlfriend/boyfriend of the week guest star of the same sex" - a vital skill for any TARDIS traveller.

The first shot of her dancing by herself in the classroom is beautiful and eerie - unearthly child, indeed. And her final scene where the TARDIS leaves her behind and she seems to turn from a little girl into an adult all at once, dropping her key into the dirt.

Susan was a child when the show started. Whatever her actual age she was a kid and that showed, but the Dalek Invasion of Earth really showed how much she'd grown. And she was brilliant. The way she'd argue with the Doctor and bonded with Barbara. I could go on for way too long here.

As an exile in the Fourth Dimension, stuck on a planet her grandfather initially valued mainly for the quality of its junkyards, she was concerned about going to school and Learning Things. *loves*

I just love the way she stands up to the doctor in only a way family could get away with. And the eerie way in which she is introduced was amazing she was just as mysterious as he was.

The unearthly child... I had a deep and abiding love for Susan right from the start, because she reminded me so very much of me...
