the diver

I’m going to have to fourwheel in a
Doorless jeep
Across the sweep of your back and the back
Country of your county;
I will plow into the water
And it will part and churn,
Fold away in waves and
Swallow.
I will drown in Horsetooth,
Stay dead and underwater
Twenty minutes ’til you grip me,
Save me, jesus, what’s it take?
Revive I will, to roll you like a crocodile
On the bottom of the lake.
The reservoir where simple folk and
Complicated fucks go to boat
And barbeque and water ski, probably -
You and me, we are going to
Roll each other in the water until
We both become a river.
But wait.
You know I know how it really goes:
The drifting starts, the body floats
Across a distance twice as wide
As the depth of the water,
And much can hide in
The full and fearful night of deep.
I will sleep, surrender, secrets keep forever
And when you clip me to your tether and
Drag me to the shore
You will breathe into my core.
But twenty minutes stretch to forty,
Fifty, nifty, but we won’t be
(Will we?) - no, we
Won't be really rolling,
Will we?
I am already underwater,
Aren't I, smart guy?
I am already underwater,
My eyes rolled back.
