For as long as Luna could remember, she and her father had played the cloud shapes game at the family picnics they would plan in the Spring. Now, at Hogwarts, she kept the tradition. Even though she couldn’t spend the time with her father, she still set aside a bit of time each year to indulge in the game.
Laying in the soft grass that covered the Quidditch pitch year round, she tucked her arms beneath her head and inhaled deeply. Aside from the game, the overwhelming smell of life saturating the air was her favorite part of Spring. If you stayed still enough- silent enough- it was almost as if you could feel the life bursting from the earth.
Opening her eyes she gazed up at the sky and began the game. A. Armenian snorffler. B. Bumble Bee. And so she continued on until she paused, stuck, at H. It was a moment later, still stuck, that Hermione appeared in her view, taking a hesitant seat beside her on the grass. Too bad she’s not a cloud, she thought with a smile. Directing her gaze to Hermione’s eyes she turned her head slightly towards her and propped herself up with on arm.
“I’m not interrupting anything, am I?”
“No,” she replied dreamily, “I was just thinking of things that start with an H when you sat down. Funny, isn’t it?”
“Um. Yes. I- I was just wondering if...maybe...you’d like to do something with me sometime. You know, like...a date,” Hermione stuttered, whispering the last word so it was barely audible.
“Hermione,” she stared at her, her gaze unusually clear, “Are you asking me on a date?”
“Well...I was. Unless you don’t want to go. I mean. I understand if you-” She stopped mid-sentence as Luna reached out and grasped her hand.
“I would love to,” she responded before leaning in and softly kissing her. “I would absolutely love to.”
She leaned in to claim Hermione’s lips once more and as she was closing her eyes she saw it- the clear shape of a heart in the clouds. She ticked the H off her mental list with a slight smile and directed her attention to resting her hand just so on the back of Hermione’s neck. The game could wait.
