AN: I haven’t been writing in a long while. The idea came to me while I was listening to Vanessa Carlton’s Just An Ordinary Day and the lyrics were quite reflective of Alto and Ranka. Though, what I had planned for this was different than the end result. The image of Ranka on a beach carrying her shoes in hand is what inspired this.

It was the kind of day that was just perfect. A blue sky with few clouds and a cool breeze that carried with it the sea-salt tang.

It was also the perfect day to make the cadets sweat by having them do exercises on the deck. Half of them were already complaining about the cruel and inhuman treatment and upon hearing those complaints, their Captain added more laps to their run. In their powered down Ex-Gears. From one end of the deck to the other.

“You’re being unusually cruel to them, Captain,” Luca Angelloni murmured. He tapped a few keys, humming a little under his breath. There is a tiny smile on his face when he looked up, eyes alight with amusement.

“Just because there’s no war at the moment doesn’t mean we should slack off, First Lieutenant.” Alto Saotome snorted, folding his arms across his chest as he watched them thumped their way noisily to the end of the deck. They were a playful, noisy bunch, still boys really but they were a good and hard-working squad. A little run in powered down Ex-Gears won’t hurt at all.

“Are you sure it had nothing to do with the nose paint on your VF-25, senpai?” Luca said, smiling openly this time.

Someone from the squadron had spray-painted a half-naked Ranka Lee on the nose of Alto’s variable fighter the other day. Alto had taken one look, left then returned with the proper cleaning materials to wipe that off. All without saying a word or throwing an explosive display of temper. No one was admitting to the nose paint.

“Of course not,” said Alto, rolling his eyes. “Whatever gave you such a crazy idea?” The corner of his mouth twitched.

“They’re lucky that the Colonel didn’t see it,” Luca said, chuckling.

Ozma Lee, they knew, would have pitched an apoplectic fit and would have given a much harsher punishment than what Alto was dishing out. Running laps in powered down Ex-Gears was nothing compared to cleaning toilet floors with your tongue.

After two more laps, Alto called it end. The cries of relief were audible as the cadets all stopped in their run. Some were thanking some deity of theirs which had him raise an eyebrow in amusement.

“Captain is being mean,” said someone.

“I think he’s PMS-ing,” added another, followed by laughter.

“Laugh it up and I’ll have you maggots have run another lap,” Alto mock-threatened them. “Dismissed! Go hit the showers or whatever it is you all do.”

“Yes, sir!” They all saluted him smartly before heading back inside, already in much higher spirits.

Luca laughed softly. “You’re being soft on them,” he remarked, shutting down his laptop and closing it with a click. He got up, tucking it under his arm.

“I rather not explain to the Lieutenant Colonel why half of the squad are passed out.” Alto brushed the bangs out of his eyes, looking up at the sky. “It is a perfect day.”

“Have fun,” Luca said, knowingly with a cheeky grin. He gave a two-finger salute before strolling back inside, still humming that song.

Alto shook his head, turning his attention back to the sky. It really is a perfect day.

==

It was the perfect day. The sun was shining, it wasn’t too hot but breezy and she inhaled the salty tang in the air as she walked along the warm sand, feeling it trickling between her bare toes. Her sandals were slung over her shoulder as she hummed a tune. She reached up, tucking the wayward locks of hair behind her ear as she looked up at the sky. It was the colour of a blue like a washed bottom of a painted bowl.

Ranka Lee actually had a hundred and one things to do. A new single to record, a press meeting, a radio appearance, a mini concert for TV in promoting her new single, a media - several magazine interviews and photo shoots. None of which she was doing at the moment. Instead, she had gone down to the beach for a breather.

It was unprofessional, it was selfish, it was irresponsible. She knew that but she needed a little break
to clear her mind and to relax. She wriggled her toes in the warm sand, feeling the roughness
against her skin as she stood looking out at the sea.

The Vajra’s home planet was beautiful, all blue and green like the earth as she had been told and seen in pictures. The sea sparkled under the glare of the sun, like millions of twinkling stars. She felt a smile coming to her face at the view.

A shadow fell across her. For a moment, she thought it was Ai. The Vajra had taken to leaving her for long periods since their arrival here, flying off to join his kind. She didn’t mind so much since he would always come back, no matter how long he had been gone.

“I thought it was you,” a familiar voice said, accompanied by the low whine of engine. “The hair colour is hard to miss.”

“Alto,” she exclaimed, surprised and pleased to see him. She raised her hand, shielding her eyes from the sun as she watched him did a circle over her before landing.

He landed a little ways from her, unlocking the Ex-Gear and tugging the head gear off before making his way over. He looked the same as the last time she saw him, except maybe his hair had gotten a little longer. He still wore it tied up in that high ponytail. She remembered the feeling of silk in her hands that time on Galia 4.

“Hello, Alto,” she said, smiling at him. She had grown during the last year, reaching up to his chin now, though she was still short in comparison to Sheryl Nome who was taller.

“Hello, Ranka,” he returned with a soft smile. It was a familiar routine between them.

“I didn’t think you’d be here,” she said, hands clasped behind her back. The sandals thumped against the back of her legs. She still felt shy around him, even though she had gotten less timid over time. After all, he was the first boy she had ever fallen in love with.

“It’s a perfect day for flying,” he said, looking up.

He always did looked at the sky. She remembered the paper planes he always folded and threw into
the sky, the way his expression would soften at the sight of those planes soaring up.

“I heard from Brother that you made captain. Congratulations,” she told him, sincerely.

He lifted a hand up, scratching at the back of his neck in a show of embarrassment. “It’s nothing, just another rank,” he said, face slightly red but there was the pleased smile on his face.

“I think it’s still wonderful,” she said, allowing the other hand to fall back to her side. “You’re an amazing pilot, Alto.”

He blushed and stuttered something about better pilots, and she giggled at him causing him to shoot her a mock glare. They lapsed into silence for a while, just enjoying each other’s company and the view before them.

Their hands, she noticed, were close enough to touch; the backs of their hands just a hair’s breadth away. No one was here now. No fans, no Sheryl, no Manager calling her to get back to work. She touched her fingers to his before tentatively curling them around his fingers in a light hold. She felt his surprise rather than seeing it then his fingers relaxed and he held her hand gently.

Standing side by side, they both looked out over the sea and at the endless blue sky.

It was the perfect day.

Owari.

Extra Notes:

The rankings are from US Army officer ranks. It seems more suitable than the marine or air force rankings. I presume the series used the same as Ozma was a Colonel and Michel was 2nd Lieutenant.

Time line is post-series, about a year after the war and this has nothing to do what events are in the upcoming movie.

luca, macross frontier, alto, ranka
