Cara smiled. It felt good to be back in her leathers.

“I think you’re right.” Kahlan said, startling Cara.

“You know when people walk away from camp it usually means that they want privacy,” Cara said shortly, turning to find Kahlan in the shade of a young oak tree, leaning against its trunk, “you know, to dress.”

“You’ve never been one for privacy before.” Kahlan quipped.

Cara sighed, rolling her eyes. She knew she was never going to win this argument. “What do you mean: right?”

“I think you do look better in that.”

Cara narrowed her eyes, not quite trusting what the confessor was saying. She trusted no one she couldn’t rationalise the motives of. “Is this a trick?” She asked.

“Are you so unaccustomed to compliments?” Kahlan asked, a flicker of something Cara couldn’t identify flashing in her eyes.

“Mord’ Sith do not need compliments, we know our strengths.” Cara said in a manner so certain that it sounded rehearsed or at least well used.

“Still, you look... right, back in your leather. It suits you.” Kahlan said, smiling that smile that smile that always made Cara uneasy. “I just wanted to say thank you,” Kahlan begun asfter a pause, “for coming to save me. I know it couldn’t have been easy for you, having to wear that ridiculous dress and deferring to that... that Margrave. You have no idea how relieved I was to see you outside those dungeon doors.”

Though far from the camp’s fire Cara felt heat rise and settle in her cheeks. “I promised Richard to protect you. I was doing my job.” Cara stated carefully, wavering as Kahlan started walking towards her.

“I think we both know that isn’t true.” Kahlan said softly, now right in front of Cara.

She leaned forward, making Cara’s eyes go wide in fear. But what Cara felt was not the sharp slap she had been anticipating, had been conditioned to expect, but a soft, hot kiss to her cheek. Cara’s breath caught in her throat and her eyes fluttered shut as Kahlan continued forward until her hair tickled the now cold spot Kahlan had just kissed and hot breath shifting the fine hair at her neck.

“My hero.” Kahlan whispered, lips brushing against Cara’s ear with every word.

When she opened her eyes Kahlan was gone.

“Women.” Cara muttered, trying to sound irritated but sounding merely breathless.

Title: Changed
Fandom: Wicked (bookverse)

Rating: R

Summary: Elphaba didn't notice.

“Elphie,” Galinda began, looking at herself in her looking glass, “do you think me... pretty?”

Elphaba narrowed her eyes and peered over her book at her roommate. “Why do you ask?” She said suspiciously, knowing any answer she gave was certain to get her into trouble.

“The boys from Three Queens are always telling me how beautiful but something tells me that they aren’t sincere. I know you wouldn’t le to me, you have no ulterior motives.” Galinda said, watching Elphaba through the mirror.

It was true, Elphaba knew, that the boys had just told Galinda she was beautiful to get into her skirts, they all wanted to. Just that evening she had thrown a pan of boiled water down on a couple of the randy buggers who had been standing below their window, attempting to climb the nearest tree to get a look inside. “Of course you are Galinda.” Elphaba answered, sounding weary of the conversation already.

Galinda frowned and broke eye contact through the mirror. She wished Elphaba would have ulterior motives, she wished Elphaba would tell her she was pretty with that glint in her eye that would mean her thoughts were far from pure. “Of course.” Galinda repeated, as if in agreement. “Maybe I should go with one of those boys then?” She asked, knowing Elphaba knew what she meant by ‘go’.

Elphaba made a noise that signified she cared neither way.

Galinda felt she could cry.

...

When Galinda returned to the room late the next evening Elphaba didn’t even wake. She didn’t wake when Galinda winced in pain as she walked awkwardly into the room, clutching her skirts to her legs. She didn’t wake as Galinda yelped in pain as she sat on the end of her powder pink bed. She didn’t wake when Galinda began to weep at the loss of her innocence against the tree between the river and the ale house. She didn’t wake when Galinda ran water through her dress, trying to get the bright red blood from it. She didn’t wake as Galinda bit back a scream at the pain she felt slipping into a bath of hot water, finding she was still bleeding.

She had snuck out that night after Ama Clutch had left to check on Dr Dillamond and not come back. The next day changed everything more than it already had.

Elphaba never did notice.
