exit meadows

what a sweet weekend. emily and i wandered around Essex, Conn. like two Q-Tips. "EXIT MEADOWS" is hilarious. what a trip. I started laughing my ass off the second I rolled in. I hope the next time i'm in an assisted living community is ... NEVER. we went to Walmart, which was kind of freaky. I was wearing my Bush anti-christ t-shirt. no one seemed to notice, unfortunately. We found a staplegun so we could put up COLORED christmas lights on her porch. then we journeyed to Groton to get Taco Hell. my farts still smell like a rotten seven layer burrito. we also found a liquor store that sold Abita beer. cool! back at her place, we shared a few beers before going over to Papa Jack's. I walked into her screen door and fell on the floor, dying of laughter. We looked up the laughable ready.gov site. check out their suggestions for the average citizen after a nuclear blast. Dinner at Papa Jack's was mesmerizing. He's lived such a long, rich life and I kicked into reporter mode and asked him all i could. He's got a crystal clear, strong strong heart. I love Emily's mom Wendy, too. I think Emily, Wendy, Catherine and April need to spend some time together, two widows and their two dadless daughters. bella got to come home with us after dinner. she's a wiley coyote! what a sweet pup and what a personality! she's so loving, too. emily passed out while we were watching Control Room, a great documentary about media coverage of the U.S. invasion of Iraq. i sent picture messages to a few people, talked to art and emailed michael and finally felt tired enough to sleep. then bella started howling her ass off beginning at like 7:30 a.m. yaaaa. we were forced to wake up for a while, put in Labryinth and then fell asleep again, thankfully, once Bella chilled out a bit. hung out today for a while and watched a really cool series on the Discovery/NYTimes channel, Off to War. check it out if you can. the drive back was really short, an hour and 15 minutes, and i hung out with my mom in south salem. we sat out on the back porch as the sun faded into dusk and caught up on a lot of things. we were kind of fighting a few weeks ago, so it felt good to apologize about that and move on and be close again. we met up with Kate and her mom for dinner to celebrate Kate's birthday. it was a blast and we had some delicious chocolate martinis. ... rebecca, i have a present for you!

i will leave you with this gorgeous love letter George Bellows (famous American Painter) wrote (from Monhegan Island) to Emma Bellows in August 1911:

'If you were with me we could tramp the wild places all day, and be alone together again, and sit by the sea in the night wind, and watch the moon lay a silver carpet over the ocean. We could slip over these velvet covered monsters down at the sea's brink and watch the waves reach for us, and you could laugh at me for being timid and afraid of those crystal green hands which are so clean and cold and everything I spoke of to you would be about Love and beauty and love again and the greatness of this nature which is in us. We two and the great sea and the mighty rocks, greater than the sea and we two greater than the rocks and the sea. Four eternities.'
