Well, here it is.
Thank you Mr. Olson [cuz he introduced me - he messed up at first and called me the salutatorian. I was offended.]
Most of us have been waiting for this day throughout our high school careers, and finally, here it is.
The future is here, now, tonight, but also tomorrow, the next day, and the next. You're all well aware that, for us, this day clearly marks the end of one stage in life and the beginning of another. We'll all move forward in different directions until graduation becomes a distant memory and this speech long-forgotten. I could only hope to stand up here and say something profound enough to make an impact on each of you, but I realize that this will probably not be the case. In fact, I myself will probably forget the finer points of this speech within a week or two. But I do hope you'll remember some of the things I've learned in life (and high school) so far.
I've learned that change is inevitable. Whether you're one to embrace changes or detest them, they're going to keep coming throughout the rest of your life. Tonight marks one big change for us all: we'll go from being high school students to high school graduates, and there's no turning back now. The future is here, and once we leave here tonight, we'll have to go our separate ways out into the world. Some of you will choose to build your futures here in or near [STC]; others will leave in search of something bigger and better. Just remember that whichever sort of future you choose for yourself, you're going to have to work to get what you want out of it. If you don't put any effort into it, you're not going to get much in return. Take the initiative, take some risks! After all, each one of you takes a risk every day just by getting out of bed. If you aren't satisfied with something, change it. Don't settle for less than what you want. If you spend your whole life just settling instead of striving to get what you want, you probably won't be very happy. And only you can determine where your future will take you. No, it won't be all sunshine and roses the whole way. As was the case in the past, there will be hard times to go along with the good. But without the bad times, we wouldn't be able to fully appreciate the good.
We are what we are because of our pasts; what we will become depends on our future. Choose your futures wisely, and once you do, don't look back. The past is gone; the future is here.
