things are really ready to start rolling! i have officially finished two of my rhyming abc books. i am debating trying to draw them for myself.. it could be simple enough for me to do it, but when i finish the story books i will definitely need someone to draw those, too complicated for my meager drawing skillz.

the official plan (so far):- this ( Read more... )

Indeedy! It costs musicians to play for free, but in exchange they get to establish their brand!

if i successfully distribute these

You may be able to consign some in Portland's finer small-press 'zine/bookstores, plus there are of course 'zine distribution services that might like to try vending your wares. (If you just want to clear out of stock, you might also try donating copies to libraries.)

i am not out to make a profit doing this, or even to break evenYou're certainly not going to break even on the equipment investment with a single printing of a single book, unless it's the next Harry Potter... all the same you should Do The Math and work out what your expenses per unit are (for materials, artist fees, etc) so you can set a fair price and predict how much money you make or lose per book instead of just devil-may-care hemmoraging cash from the nose and ears. (I just read a book on self-publishing during my hellish ferry ride yesterday, can you tell? Strangely, this DIY approach wasn't mentioned. I guess most people ( ... )

yes! i actually know a lot of zinesters in pdx, i was definitely planning on asking them for tips on where to potentially sell.. also, giving them to libraries for the win!

i didn't think i would break even, but realizing how low the cost actually is for a high quality, color laser printer and how low the cost is for a simple laminator (to baby proof the pages!) and getting the idea to bind the books with two simple, plastic rings i am really thinking i might! but yes, once i've bought the printer, laminator, supplies, etc. i'll really be able to see what the cost per unit will be. i wish i was just making a zine, then i could just buy a really low cost printer and go berserk. no laminating, no assembling. but really, i don't know if i've got a voice to share with adults yet. i do know, however, that my rhymes are fun for kiddos and i know what kids like. so yes, greater faith and all that. : ] thanks!

If you're serious about this, you might be interested in beefing up the costs a bit and printing on some heavier card stock... something that can stand up to some abuse 8) Of course, many kids just look at supposedly-undamageable childproof products as a challenge to be overcome 8)

i do know, however, that my rhymes are fun for kiddos and i know what kids like.

Since we're talking about going for the win, I think the grand slam would be fortifying yr accordion skillz a bit (not necessarily a lot -- what do kids know from technique?) and putting on shows where you sing the rhymes. Either you buy a book and get the show for free or buy a ticket and get a book for free.

i was actually planning on printing on card stock type of paper! though i imagine that, with the lamination, it might not be much of a difference?

what's too cute is that ankur suggested a similar accordion/book combination too! great minds think alike, it's true! though i tend to sign not so awesome, i am totally considering it..
