I wish it were fall so I wouldn't have to wear shorts or sweat so much. I'd be back at school, finally on my way to finishing up this long and winding road to academic achievement. The pain would be less, I'd hope, and she'd be gone. But who knows? Maybe that would only make me miss her more. My friends would go back to school and then I'd have a real reason for never going out. I realize that this seems like blasphemy, but you didn't have the same summer that I did.
But one thing this summer has taught me is that people don't understand how much work relationships actually take. Once you get past the initial couple of months where everything is grand and you're just finding out about eachother, things kind of fall off. And no, I'm not talking about YOU, because YOU just happens to be like 1 out of 10 people that I've had to console over the summer. YOU is the amalgamation of many tortured hearts, so don't think I'm using YOU as an example. But I am.
Anyways...
I believe that when you're young, love is every day. It's phone calls and movies and dinners and trips to the zoo. It's kisses in the rain and making out in the backseat of your car with the radio blaring no one's favorite song. It's midnight ice cream and thousands of rented videos. It's high expectations and it's beautiful because of that.
But...
When you're old, love is forever. It's doing the dishes every night because she took the time to cook you dinner, it's losing sleep to wake up with the kids because he works to provide you with a comfortable life. It's maybe one night alone for a date in a week, but only if you're lucky. It's looking forward to the day when your kids go off to college and you finally have the house to yourselves again. It's waiting for the first grandchild to arrive. It's the feeling you get when he still opens your car door for you, even if it's just half of the time...or the way you still think she looks good without makeup after 20 years. It's knowing that soon all of this will be over, but that it was worth it.
People love to hold onto things. A feeling, a job, a person, or a place. It's not that I don't do that as well, it's that I finally understand why doing that holds me back. It keeps me from becoming who I'm supposed to be, and I'm desperately trying to find out who that is. Tell me if you know.
I was shocked at how accurate this survey thing was. It asked all these weird questions about animals but this is what it told me:
The Keys to Your Heart
You are attracted to good manners and elegance.
In love, you feel the most alive when things are straight-forward, and you're told that you're loved.
You'd like to your lover to think you are optimistic and happy.
You would be forced to break up with someone who was emotional, moody, and difficult to please.
Your ideal relationship is lasting. You want a relationship that looks to the future... one you can grow with.
Your risk of cheating is zero. You care about society and morality. You would never break a commitment.
You think of marriage as something precious. You'll treasure marriage and treat it as sacred.
In this moment, you think of love as something you thirst for. You'll do anything for love, but you won't fall for it easily.
