The desk, usually covered in papers, charts, dirty mugs and pencils, was now holding ten boxes of the finest Swiss chocolate. Each box was adorned with a bright red bow and had a little card attached to it. The cards all bore a cat motif and since it wasn’t of the cartoon variety, they immediately identified the giver as someone other than Minako Aino.
Takeshi picked up the phone and dialled their home number. Minako answered on the second ring. “Aww, you missed me!” Takeshi smiled, twirling a pencil in his right hand. “I only left two hours ago. I’m surprised you’re already awake.” He could hear her laugh softly. Minako liked to sleep in, especially on the mornings when the dog walking duty was Takeshi’s. “I was calling about the chocolate,” he said, corners of his mouth tugging further upwards. When Minako didn’t answer, he pressed forth. “And 70% cocoa, my favourite. That was very thoughtful of you.” A nervous giggle travelled through the phone line and Takeshi broke into a rare, but full grin. “Yes, yes, of course! Did you think I’d forget Valentine’s Day?” Minako’s voice had taken on an edgy quality. Content to let her stew this one out, Takeshi leaned back in his chair. “And ten boxes. Minako, this was very generous of you.” “That’s me, spirit of generosity,” Minako chirped, her voice a tad higher than usual. Checking that the door was closed, Takeshi leaned in for the kill. “And those very tasteful little cards - I’m more of a dog person, but cats are also... nice.”
Takeshi counted: ten seconds of silence before...“Oh fuck it,” Minako huffed and Takeshi laughed. “I hate your secretary,” she said with emphasis. “Fine, I forgot Valentine’s Day. I’ll make it up with kinky sex when you get home tonight.” “And chocolate,” he added seriously and rang off. Opening the first box, he took a bit of chocolate out and ate it. Valentine’s Day was shaping up to be his favourite holiday.
