I'm recording my inital thoughts on the album, so that in a month or so, I can look back see what happened when I let it marinate.
To me this album feels like that epic childhood love, the one who was the first to break your heart for real, but who also taught you to dance.
This also makes me love my brother for getting me some high quality headphones for christmas.
specific track stuff is cut, in case someone should stumble upon this who doesn't want it spoiled.
1. Thriller- First of all, jay-z. lulz. and then, fuck yeah to shouting out the fans who ‘held us down, til everybody came around.’ I love the drums on this track, andy you have my heart. Especially the places where the drums and guitars sort of metal-out. That against Patrick’s singing. Lyrics. The place where the guitar/drums mimic a heartbeat, lovely. Long live the car crash hearts in roundsish. Pretty little melody parts on the guitar. And then jay-z super lulz.
2. The Take Over, the Break’s Over- Makes my shoulders shake. I can not keep still when this song is on. Oh patrick, your voice. We don’t fight fair ear switches. Uh uh. Really interesting piano parts. The pre-outro is absolutely epic sounding, the guitar/drum is great.
3. This Ain’t a Scene, It’s an Arms Race- What could I possibly say about this aint a scene that hasnt already been said? This whole track is fucking solid. I adore every moment. Oh gods the lyrics. One thing: the spoken part is so much better when it’s done by Patrick instead of Pete. No offense, wentz, but your voice just doesn’t make me wanna get up and pump my fist in the air like Patrick’s does, I think Pete just likes an excuse to get on the mic during performances.
4. I’m Like a Lawyer the Way I’m Always Trying to Get You Off (Me&You) - The funk kind of feel to the guitars/way patrick sings it. Lyrics! I don’t like the chorus so much though, especially the “if I woke up next to you” part. It tastes of boy band to me, I just can’t get into it. Sucky cause I love the other parts. Probably going to be the most skipped track for me, unfortunately.
5. Hum Hallelujah- This seems very traditional FOB to me, classic pop punk. The way patrick’s voice goes up and down during who knows someone who knows someone. Vocals in general. The chorus makes my stomach lift up into my chest. The lyrics on it are great as well. The hallelujah part made me go trans-Siberian orchestra what? at first, but I think it’ll grow on me. The hum hallelujah’s at the end are nice.
6. Golden- 2 and a half minutes showcasing Patrick’s voice? Fuck yes, please. The lyrics are beautiful. The harmonies are beautiful. The piano is beautiful. I love how its so simple and so dark. 2:00 <- Amazing. This song feels like praying in a time of desperation.
7. Thnks Fr Th Mmrs- This makes me think so hard of their new year’s performance with AAR. Another classic FOBy sounding track to me. The violin/guitar work. It makes me feel like such a stalker but I got excited by “he tastes like you only sweeter.” pretty little spanish-feel breakdown.
8. Don’t You Know Who I Think I Am?- Any track that makes good use of claps has my vote. The voice. Lyrics sound like a blog, in a good way. (Prolly cause they were at one point)
9. The (After) Life of the Party- I love the progressive beat, definitely not what people might expect from FOB. Lyrics. Disenchanted songs steal my heart. Love the percussion during the verses, its amazing.
10. The Carpal Tunnel of Love- It might just be because I’ve already heard this one so many times, but this track doesn’t excite me as much. Blistered feet stomp (which I don’t think was in my other version) is pretty neat. Patrick again! I don’t like Pete’s hxc interlude. I don’t feel like it adds like it does in other tracks (Saturday, ftw) Most likely my second most skipped.
11. Bang the Doldrums- I love the guitar. Love the vocals. Oh dear, the lyrics are excellent. I know, I’m such a slasher, but they give me a definite Mikey/Pete feel. (Whether that’s affecting my opinion of the song, idk) O-ee-yo-ho-oh. The female backup vocals.
12. Fame < Infamy- Vocals. Lyrics. Violin and whatever that weird bupbupbup (cello? Upright bass? I know nothing about music) thing was. Guitar/violin melody towards the end. Reminds me of Tonight, Tonight! during the little breakdown, which is a good thing.
13. Your Crashing, But You’re No Wave- This sounds kind of Panic! At the Disco to me. So, suits me just fine. Subtle use of the piano. The faster pieces of the verses remind me of the punk I grew up on, Bad Religionesque. The chorus in the backround. The theatrical/dramatic feeling, storytelling (probably part of why it reminds me of P!ATD). 2:37 <- whoever comes in there. Guilty, guilty, guilty, guilty. Oh wow the chorus at the end.
14. I’ve Got All This Ringing in My Ears and None On My Fingers- Intro had me like ‘rocky!’ but that’s part of what I love. Lyrics. Thunderous drums/bass. Definitely another shoulder shaker on the verses. Then, then, it goes into the chorus and its like this absolutely beautiful rock ballad. Patrick’s voice. The contrast between the beat of the verses and the ballady feeling of the choruses. The fucking trumpets. Lyrics. Guitar that makes me think of queen. Babababadadadadum. Patrick, my heart. This is the song that crushed me. My chest got tight while I was listening to it. I think its my favorite on the whole album.
I actually kind of dislike the ‘press repeat’ part, which is funny because I’ve been listening to it over and over, so everytime that stupid press repeat part comes on, I do.
In general I love:
the use of more instruments, the trumpet and violin and piano pieces are lovely
more complicated song structures, it just makes it more fun to listen to
the beats, so danceable, so catchy, they just stick with you
vocals, I feel like they’re really using Patrick to his full potential on this cd, his voice does some amazing things
I love how they’ve shook up their sound, without getting to the place where they would alienate their fan-base. This whole cd just sounds so fresh.
I don’t think carpal tunnel should’ve been the single after arms race. I think the take over or all this ringing in my ears would do better as singles than carpal tunnel will.
anyway, that's that. and my god, I've spent the last 5 and a half hours just listening to this album, which is probably the biggest indicator of my appreciation for it.
