A Rambled Explanation
Rachel didn't know GaiusxUther was an actual pairing. I started to try and explain but..it took off on it's own a bit OTL

Of course it is. Like..it’s just kind of cute yknow? In a heartbreaking way. If you think about it. A young Uther and Gaius, growing up to where they are now as the king and his trusted adviser and physician. And even when the time comes that Uther falls in love with Igraine, Gaius will stay by his side because that’s what you do when you care about somebody, even if they no longer feel that way about you. So he stays in the background, keeping an eye on his friend and king, just glad for those moments when he can be of use. And even if he doesnt agree with all his friend has done, Gaius wouldn’t change a thing because after all this time he knows what Uther is like. So he helps in the fight against sorcery, fixing enchantment after enchantment, helping rid camelot of magic just for the little moments of happiness he sees on his king’s face when the kingdom is safe once more.
It’s like Arthur and Merlin, in love now but Arthur has to marry Guinevere and though Merlin knows this and it breaks his heart, he will never leave Arthur’s side. Not just for destiny but because he couldn’t ever imagine being anywhere else. All the years of being side by side has made anything else impossible. So he’ll stay as Gaius stayed, he’ll hurt in the background as Gaius did, the only difference is he will change Arthur’s mind about magic. It will take time, but magic will return long after Gaius has passed, and though he’ll live the rest of his days with a broken heart, watching Arthur and Guinevere grow old together, raise a child together; do things that in their foolish teen hearts they had said they would do together, just Arthur and Merlin, he’ll at least have his magic and the freedom to use it. It may be all he has, but he wouldn’t dare ask for anything more because at least Arthur is happy, and through all their years together, that’s all Merlin has ever really wanted.
