Uphill - By: Cristina Rossetti
Does the road wind uphill all the way?
Yes, to the very end.
Will the day’s journey take the whole long day?
From morn till night, my friend.
But is there for the night a resting place?
A roof for when the slow dark hours begin.
May not the darkness hide it from my face?
You cannot miss that inn.
Shall I meet other wayfarers at night?
Those who have gone before.
Then must I knock, or call when just in sight?
They will not keep you standing at that door.
Shall I find comfort, travel-sore and weak?
Of labor you shall find the sum.
Will there be beds for me and all who seek?
Yea, beds for all who come.

This poem is a dialogue between a person and God. This person knows that he/she is on the verge of death.
Stanza 1: Is this journey of life always going to be hard? Yes, you’re going to struggle until the day you die. it’s a really tough path. Will I have to keep working my whole lifetime? Every hour of every day? Yes, from the moment you’re born till the moment you die life is a challenge.
Stanza 2: Is there a break? Sleep of death? Is there a grave for me? Yes. In the darkness of death will I be able to find heaven? What do I do when I reach the gates? They’ll immediately let you in.
Stanza 3: Will I be alone? Will there be other travelers along side me? Yes, those who have died before you. Will I have to wait at the gates of heaven? What do I do when I reach the gates? They’ll immediately let you in.
Stanza 4: Will I still be tired in heaven? Will I be comfortable? Yes, all your hard work is going to pay off. Will there be room for me? Yes, there’s a bed for everyone. No one will be rejected or shut out that deserves to be in heaven.
I absolutely love this poem b/c these are the questions that everyone, at least once in their lifetime, has wondered about. They wonder if there really is a God, if there is a “heaven.” If you ask me I’d tell you exactly what I BELIEVE. “God is real and so is Heaven.” I have this poem in my binder at school b/c I tend to over react over tests and projects and I completely forget that It REALLY DOESN’T MATTER AS MUCH AS I THINK!!! God doesn’t care what you G.P.A. is, he could care less. So don’t forsake God in order to have good grades!! Peas….and……..(Emily I need you.)
