summary: woo sung hyun was kidnapped at the age of seven, leaving behind his parents, older sister, and best friend kim kibum. ten years later, in kibum's senior year, he is shocked to meet a new student that goes by the name of kevin shin and resembles his childhood best friend.
“Dongho-yah, do you see Eli?”
The small boy looked around, his eyes large as he stood on tiptoe trying to look over the clumped multitude of people. His petite hands clung to Kevin’s in fear of getting lost or taken, something the baby had always been afraid of. For a five year old, Kevin had to admit, he was smart enough to know what to do when he was in a crammed place.
“Der he is! Der he is! Eywi! Eywi!”
Dongho jumped up and down on his tiny legs, letting go of Kevin’s hand to wave frantically for Eli to see him. And from Kevin’s stance, Eli saw them. The brunette rushed over, pushing people aside until he was able to meet Dongho and pick him up into a huge bear hug, commenting about how big the boy had gotten. Kevin rolled his eyes because it had only been a week since Eli waved them goodbye from their former drive way.
“And Kevin! You’ve gotten so much prettier. What’d you do? Go to a paling bed or something?”
He narrowed his eyes, biting his tongue back from backlashing since this had become a ritual for Eli-commenting on how pale he was. “Yes, Eli, and I suppose you went to a flying school, too, considering how fast you here, huh?”
“Becuz Eywi is a pigen, wite?”
“Yes, Dongho, because Eywi is a pigen.” Kevin smiled over at his brother who only giggled when Eli began tickling him, spouting out nonsense about him being human and not a pigen. But Dongho just laughed, smiling happily, even when Eli put him back down on the floor and he re-attached himself to Kevin’s hand. In midst of a heavy conversation, Kevin and Eli let Dongho lead them to the toy store, a cookie stand, and finally to a food stand where they ordered a plate of teriyaki chicken on white rice.
“Dongho, you hold the chopsticks like this.” Kevin demonstrated with his own, becoming slightly amused when the boy failed and failed until he gave up and just stabbed the cooked poultry and popped it into his mouth. “Or…you can just do that. Is it good, Dongho-yah?”
“’Es, Kebin!” Dongho beamed happily while chewing his food, shamelessly talking with his mouth completely full.
Letting his eyes wonder about, Kevin people watched. He had always felt awkward in crowded places, particularly malls, so it had become a heavy habit he had acquired to watch his surroundings, especially the people. His obsession with this habit became worse when he went blonde, he went back brunette after being confused for a girl, and found that he drew more attention to himself, which brought the same amount of attention to the small child that normally accompanied him on his outings.
When Dongho was two and Kevin was fourteen, they had both gotten lost in the mall. It wouldn’t have been so bad if it hadn’t been Christmas Eve. With Dongho being so small, Kevin found himself letting the baby ride around on his back as he searched for their parents. When the stores started closing, the older one began to panic and it had showed from the way he had tears rolling down his cheeks. He stood in the middle of the mall with a baby asleep on his back and nowhere to go. His heart had palpitated and his chest had become tight, almost like he had been faced with a deep phobia he didn't know he had. When he was beginning to think they had been left or forgotten, their mother had ran around a corner, screaming their names. He had cried so hard in his mother’s arms and apologized for getting lost and risking his brother’s safety. Ever since then, even without the knowledge of why being lost had scared him so bad, Kevin found himself a little too protective.
No one looked their way, not even once. Two guys and a little boy didn’t look too suspicious, he guessed. But that still didn’t stop him from watching. He glanced everywhere, from the cinema to the toy store; from the restrooms to each food stand when his eyes swam past the video game store. He barely caught him, but he knew he was there. Walking out of the store was Kibum, with another guy, laughing and pointing at something in his hand, probably a video game. The happiness his face showed and the amusing dance his eyes did had Kevin taken aback. It was a completely different Kibum. It wasn’t just the attitude; the clothes were different as well.
Clad in a black, button down shirt and jeans, Kibum looked pretty good compared to his school and at home manner. His hair was styled and his face freshly shaven, giving him a boyish, almost innocent, look. From afar, Kevin sort of found him attractive.
“So, Kev, whatcha lookin’ at?” Eli was suddenly behind him, peering from his shoulder in the direction he had been staring at. “Oh! Which one is it? The bunny or the sex god?”
Kevin jerked back a little, flinching at Eli’s words. “S-Sex god?” He turned his head a little, eyeing his best friend for a confirmation.
“Yeah, the one that looks like he’s been around the block a bit, if ya know what I mean. Which one are you ogling over?”
“N-Neither!” Kevin felt his face flame up. Even if he had been pondering Kibum to be attractive, he didn’t have to tell his best friend, he also had never really thought of Kibum as a sex god, he had only met him the day before. “I just thought it to be weird to see Kibum out this early. He seemed like one of those guys that slept late into the day. You know, like you.”
Eli flicked the back of the boy's head before sitting back down next to Dongho, accepting the child’s offering of rice. “At least Dongie here is nice to me.”
Kevin rolled his eyes for what seemed to be the tenth time since he woke up that day and went back to people watching, stopping again when Kibum came back into view, this time closer than before, and this time staring right back at him. They watched one another almost intamently; it was like the older one was lookign into his soul. Gasping silently and looking away, Kevin shot up, “Let’s go get ice cream now.”
Looking up, Eli stared questionably, “Now?”
“Yeah, now. Let’s go now. Throw the rest of the rice away and let’s go.” As he spoke Kevin started to pick up their trash, ignoring his thumping heart and shaking hands. When his eyes had locked onto Kibum’s, he remembered that picture that collected dust in the other’s room. The one of two boys sitting together like nothing else mattered but each other. The way the older child had looked in the picture was how Kibum had been staring back at him, and that stare had triggered something in his body that had it in a panic stricken mode.
“Ice ceam! Ice ceam!” Dongho sang when he jumped from his seat and grabbed a hold of Eli’s and Kevin's hands, letting the two oldest drag him along.
Kibum’s morning had started around noon with a call from Hoon after his second attempt at sleeping peacefully. Hoon was his best friend, but that gave him no reason to wake him up and Kibum happily (overstatement) told him that when they met up at the mall an hour later.
Going out into public was something Kibum abhorred, primarily on weekends that he could fritter away in bed or on the couch. But when he did, he had to look nice, no matter what. Whether he was going to the mall or to the store with his mother, he had to look nice; freshly shaven, showered, and primly dressed, was how he rolled. Even if he didn’t have money, he had to look like he did. Hoon said it was a trait his brother and him shared, probably passed down from their father’s side of the family.
“This new game came out today.”
Kibum idly spoke to Hoon as they walked through the mall, just enjoying, or hating in Kibum’s prospective, the outing and cluster of people.
“Then get it. But whatever it is, I’m sure I can kick your ass in it.”
“Oh, you said the same thing about Mortal Kombat and I still slaughtered you. Time and time again, Hoony.”
“Yeah, yeah, I gotcha this time. You better watch yourself, Kibum, because Hoony is coming to brutalize you.”
Kibum chortled, “What makes you think it’s a fighting game?”
“What? That’s easy; you love action and any type of conflict.”
That was true. Outside of school Kibum was actually pretty rowdy. When it came to gaming, anyways. He owned every Modern Warfare game just so he could shoot guns and kill people, online or against the computer. In real life he wasn’t really mean or even close to violent, but when he sat down in front of the television and took the game control into his hands, he was an unstoppable killer and fighter.
“True,” Kibum agreed, pointing to the video game store and ushered Hoon inside, sighing happily when he quickly spotted the game behind the register at the front counter. “That one…” He whispered to him, feeling a tingling sensation with the thought of having a new video game to master. “Ma’am, I’d like that one right there.”
“The new one?”
“No, the old one. Of course. Don’t be silly.”
Kibum cocked his head a little to glare at Hoon for being so rude to the sales lady that turned around with a frustrated blush staining her cheeks and embarrassed tears pricking her eyes-she had to be new. When she turned back and rang the game up, Kibum smiled at her as he handed over his money, waving his hand at her when she tried to return his change, “Keep it for your wonderful service.” He felt Hoon’s eyes on him as they walked out.
“Let me see! I wanna see if you got the main card or some dumb one.”
Hoon’s hands grabbed at the game but Kibum played keep-away, laughing devilishly. “No, let’s just enjoy the fact that I bought this wonderful game for us to cream each other at later.” He pulled the game out of the bag and pointing at the amazingly graphic cover that circled the entire case, laughing again when Hoon whined when he still wasn’t allowed to break the seal to see the treasure inside.
“Hoon shut up and let’s eat something; I’m starving.”
Kibum put the game away and let his eyes travel around so he could find something tasty to eat. While he looked they both began walking towards the food court, stopping when Hoon jumped around like a puppy when he was offered a meat sample. And in that moment, Kibum saw him. He was sitting at a table with an unknown male and a little boy. Mr. Unknown was a little burly compared to Kevin, and taller too, which probably meant he was older and enjoyed working out. The little one was in all probability his baby brother that he had mentioned the night before, but that could be questionable.
Kevin was pale and lanky with long legs and high cheekbones. The little boy was slightly tanned with big cheeks and a closed-mouth smile. He had seen Dr. Shin once before and the smaller boy looked relatively like his father, but Kevin? Nothing. No real resemblance. Maybe he took after his mother but a strong intuition tugged at Kibum as he stared and analyzed the two. He didn’t look away, not when Hoon tugged at his arm, and not when Kevin found him staring and walking closer.
Those brown eyes and that innocent stare Kevin gave him when they locked eyes made his heart lurch and his breath stall. The last time someone looked at him like that was when he first met the little boy that had moved in a block away from his own apartment when he was three. The two year old had hid behind his young mother and stared at him, a small childish pout on his lips. The only thing Kevin was missing was the cute pout and it somehow reassured Kibum.
“Yo, Kibum!”
Hoon’s hand flew in front of his face, blocking the view of Kevin and the other two. Kibum blinked and shook his head, turning to his friend and frowning.
“Dude, Kibum, you’re losing it. Who were you looking at this time? Was it a cute girl?! Did I miss her?!” The other guy looked around frantically. His head shot from left to right, groaning when he didn’t see anyone. “I hate you, Kibum, you got my hopes up.”
“Hoon, you know I don’t like girls.”
“Yeah, but you also don’t like guys. For me, I like both.”
Kibum shrugged and pushed Hoon towards a food stand that served teriyaki chicken and rice. “Relationships are too much of a hassle, especially right now in my final year of high school.”
“Sure, whatever you say. I still think you need to find someone that’s prettier than a girl but has a penis like a guy. Maybe that new kid at school. He’s kinda cute.’
Taking his plate from the man at the register, Kibum turned to give Hoon a look of pure disgust. “Are you talking about Kevin? He's like...twelve.”
“Kevin? Twelve? Oh right, he wants to be called Kevin and not Sung Hyun. Haha, Sung Hyun. You call me Hoony; you can call him Hyunnie, now! Haha! Never mind, he’d have to be your friend for you to do that. And he's not twelve, he looks fifteen at the least.” Hoon laughed loudly, leaving Kibum to stand in place, staring after him. Hyunnie? Call Kevin that? Why? Kevin was nothing like his Hyunnie besides maybe the eyes.
Those eyes…
Kibum waved bye to his friend as they went their separate ways; he down his road and Hoon down his own. It was night already and Kibum mentally smacked himself for letting his Saturday get away from his so fast. If he made it home in the next ten minutes, he might have time to throw in a few minutes of game time before dinner, but with his game thrashing around in the bag he swung freely in his hand, he knew it’d at least take fifteen minutes to walk home.
The sun was setting and the wind had slowly become chilly, but it wasn’t something Kibum felt like complaining about. It was relaxing and it helped him gather his thoughts. Right, the thoughts that Kevin had been consistently invading with his annoying eyes. He had never really stared into them, but who would want to? They were so deep, empty, almost childishly-innocent. Like that little boy’s that Kevin was claiming to be his baby brother.
Sighing, Kibum shook his head, almost hating himself for judging the new kid in such a harsh way. It wasn’t right; he didn’t know the boy enough to do such a thing. Looking to the side Kibum watched the forgotten park where many memories for him had been made sit there like a desolate building. If he was ever asked where his best friend was, he could always say the park or at home. If someone questioned where he was going, he could reply with the park. That was when he was younger, much younger. When he was untouched by life and had a best friend, a best friend that wasn’t like the one he had today. A best firend he was still waiting for.
Today if he was asked those questions he would say what best friend and to the mall with Hoon.
It was a quarter to eight when Kibum walked through the door, the smell of alfredo and coffee swirling around him like a blanket. The place was warm and welcoming, almost beckoning him to keep himself locked away for eternity. He shed his shoes and dropped his bag on the small table by the door. Kibum could have smiled, could have, but didn’t when he heard two voices instead of just his mother’s calling for him to come to the table and eat.
He had a sinking feeling as he turned the corner to the dining room, his mouth close to dropping when his eyes landed on his brother, the same one that should have been away at college, sitting next to his mother eating happily. The older male looked up and smiled, waving:
“Hey, Bummie, long time.”
“Yeah… Hey.” Kibum cautiously took a seat on the other side of their mother, nodding when she patted his hand and welcomed him home. “Joon, what are you doing here?”
Hyung Joon swallowed his mouthful of noodles before answering simply, “Vacation,” and stuffed his mouth full of food once more.
“I see.”
“Mom was telling me about your new friend.” Kibum didn’t miss the glances the two shared--this was what he had been dreading when he heard his brother's voice. “She said he’s Dr. Shin’s eldest son. Is it true?”
Kibum nibbled a little of his food and nodded, not trusting his voice at the moment.
“Hm. Well, you know Dr. Shin is my professor and I’ve known him since he was an elementary teacher.”
There his brother went, babbling. “Look, I don’t know why you’re telling me this, I don’t really care.”
“Oh, but you will.” Hyung Joon looked generally pleased with himself, something Kibum didn’t always see unless he did something meaningful for their mother. “From what I know, Dr. Shin didn’t have a son until six years ago, but the boy was already ten years old, or something like that. A year later his wife had a son, her first born child, then left him not long after.”
Kibum had stopped eating halfway through the meal. He watched his brother as he spoke; wanting to make sure what he said wasn’t some kind of hoax. “But Kevin…”
“Exactly, Kevin must be adopted and either doesn’t know it or doesn’t want anyone to know. I’m not saying it’s something he would want to share if he did know, but from what Mom tells me, he doesn’t know.” Happy with himself, Hyung Joon immersed himself with his pasta.
But Kibum couldn’t continue, not with the news he just received. Two days in to knowing Kevin, he’s learned two things:
One: Kevin made him think about his Hyunnie.
Two: Kevin might be adopted and might not know.
Why Kibum cared about this, he didn’t know and was, quite frankly, too afraid to know.
A/N: Okay, here's chapter three! Just a warning, I never intended for this to reach over ten chapters. So, don't get sad when I end it before then. :( I also never expected to get over twenty subscribers, but I did! :D
Sorry for some errors. It's 6:04am and I've been up since...I don't remember. But it's almost 24hrs. :)
