When Seunghyun is handed the script for the first time, he is five years older than the character of Park Jinho and in a company car on the way to the airport for another movie. Don't really think the part is a good fit, his manager says from the passenger seat, but he was personally asked by the really famous director man to please have Seunghyun-sshi give it a once-over or two.
Halfway to the mountainous regions of inner Mongolia, Seunghyun says yes, and his manager chokes on his club soda.
Look, he splutters, in understanding of Seunghyun's personal - nobody can explain it - need or desire or what-have-you to perpetually Try New Things with every role he takes on: there is a line, here, that you are not required to cross. He meets Seunghyun's eyes and then tacks on a hasty, if you don't want to, I mean. You don't have to try this if you don't want to.
"I know," Seunghyun says, and looks out the tiny window of the jet at the cirrus clouds below a sunny sky. "I like this script, though. I like it a lot."
His manager blames it on the really famous director man's prestige.
Three weeks later, an audition tape marked 'CHOI' is passed from hand to hand until three casting agents in central Seoul watch his recitation of one of Jinho's monologues over, and over, and over over over again.
The final word comes by way of an email he checks over his mobile when he's leaving Mongolia. Seunghyun tells his manager, and the older man's mouth sets in a line like he's about to face the Christian apocalypse.
"I knew it," he says, a bit gloomy-faced. "I knew you were too good to deny."
Seunghyun laughs.
Later, Jiyong sprawls out atop the black leather couch in his studio with a highlighter and his Dolce & Gabbana glasses that obscure his eyes, his copy of the script Seunghyun made him already crinkled and earmarked as he yellows in lines like he was cast, too. This is a really bad fucking idea, he tells Seunghyun for the thirty-seventh time in an hour. Seunghyun reminds him about Big Bang's hiatus, says so it's not like he can drag Jiyong's name down with him if he goes down in flames.
"Because I don't come to every single one of your premieres or anything," Jiyong says.
"Oh," Seunghyun shrugs. "Thought you only showed up for the free popcorn," and Jiyong reaches the three feet over to shove the back of Seunghyun's chair until he's rolling fast across the room and crashing knees-first into the glass door.
the movie is how this character top's playing, park jinho, struggles with being gay in modern-day korea. gd spends a lot of time helping top memorize lines, which turns into them hanging out more in general, and i just really wanted to write about the development and change, the ~crossing the line~, in their relationship as parallel to the one that develops between jinho and daeshim (jinho's loveline). there'd also be jealousy coming from gd toward the guy who's cast to play daeshim. another thing i will have to figure out: how to write & deal with the incredibly real issue of coming out in korea
the island!verse: i don't actually have much on this yet except gd and top in place of euan and scarlett..... i was also debating making this cl/seungri bc i feel like seungri would suit euan's role better, but i guess we'll see after i actually map it out in detail. also i was debating with having gd and top's ~real people~ that they were cloned from be g-dragon and t.o.p, lol. i have to figure out how to make this more mine and not just a clone of the movie.
