Goodbye, AT&T. Hello, CLEAR!

Jan 27, 2010 18:34

After much angst and agita in dealing with the constantly dropping internet connection through AT&T, I decided to cancel with them and go with CLEAR, which costs about $15 less per month (I'm not counting the 6-month promo for new customers) AND allows me to bypass the stupid WebWasher thing at school and actually surf the web freely thanks to the ( Read more... )

Yeah... AT&T/Cingular and I had a parting of ways a few years ago over something else entirely, but I immediately noticed much better coverage and nearly no dropped calls with Verizon. While supporting a mega giant company goes against the grain, I gotta say I'm awfully happy with them (and with the two mobile internet connections we have through them)

Now that I've been talking to others about my problems with AT&T, I'm realizing that NOBODY likes them--well, my Seester excepted. She's had GREAT service with them. I think she may be the *only* only who has!

Clear is pretty sweet, but be careful if you have to move, the service is not perfect everywhere, and people have been stuck with $200 contract termination fees when they moved outside the service and had to end it.

Personally I want to wait till it's a little more saturated and I can confirm no bandwidth cap, but it is a very attractive setup from my point of view as well.

I'll be in Atlanta for a while, and if I *do* move, it'll be further into the City, not away from it, where the service coverage is stronger than what I get now.

At any rate, with AT&T, I couldn't get Vuze to work right for love or money. Last night, I got a dl of Top Gear--a 750MB file--in about 40 minutes. It's super fast, and at times I had speeds up to about 600kbps. In Japan, where they really choke down P2P stuff, my speeds averaged about 50kbps!

I've got a break coming up. We should meet for lunch somewhere and catch up!

How is the coverage on clear? I thought it was only Atlanta proper but I know they were expending it.

I think the only reason we are with T Mobile is because they were the first to get reception to our house. I live in a little vally... But I think everyone gets reception now.

They *just* turned on the tower in my area, so I'm right on the southern edge of the coverage map. In fact, the tower activation was so recent, the main CLEAR site doesn't even recognize that my zip code is covered! Still, when the nice lady at the shop showed me the detailed coverage map, the area surrounding my appartment was nice and "green." Mainly, I'm happy that I didn't have to go with Comcast--who is also The Devil.

I have Comcast but my dad is the one who deals with them. The internet is good but I think they like to change the price of things randomly.
