Author Says: It was one of those drabbles I felt compelled to write, but not quite sure if I caught what I was trying to. I know I'm going to write another piece, Rufus in the moments when Kadaj flings Tseng and Elena's cards (slash tinted, of course), but  I want to capture that one just right.

Rufus Shinra’s life had once again, after years of painstakingly re-building, fallen into a sense of routine. The threat of death was not currently looming overhead and he was able to run his company in relative peace. He could wake up and take the time to have a cup of coffee before pouring over countless stacks of paperwork. He could, if he so wished, stop and look out of the window in his new office and watch the re-building process of what had been lost. He could leisurely stroll down the hallway and through the building, checking on progress and directing new processes. He could take his time knowing his life, or anyone else’s, was not in immediate danger.

But he didn’t.

Rufus woke with a start every morning, his body no longer remembering how else to react, and would remain tense until he looked out his bedroom window. He would bring his coffee with him to his office and methodically work, only emerging for routine checks and required business meetings. His behavior remained the same as ever, but those who had been working at his side long as he could remember knew something was amiss.
As long as Rufus could remember he’d always had a shadow. It had been irritating when he was younger and comforting when only slightly older. Wanted or not, he’d never been alone. Now, in a building full of people, he felt exactly that.
Turks knew exactly what they signed up for when they donned their suit. Reno had once said: Live as a Turk, die as a Turk. Unfortunately, it was only truth. While they braced themselves for it each day when they dressed, Rufus somehow managed to fool himself into thinking them untouchable. His Turks could not be, in his mind, killed. He knew what Tseng would say to that.
Naïve boy.

No matter how skilled or dedicated the man, the employer was doomed to be the last one standing.
