Author Says: I was working on something cuter with the boys, but the inspiration was not coming and this came out of the desire to do something that didn't involve my book.

Cloud stared at the buster sword. Dirt and rust had accumulated on the once immaculate blade, the tip of which was driven deep into the ground. He stared at the blade as if it held the answers he sought despite knowing nothing would ever come of it. He put a gloved hand on the hilt. He hadn’t taken care of it like he knew he should have, but perhaps part of him had been childish. Perhaps, despite that they had won, he wanted to shout.

Cloud had spoken to Aerith. Zack had come to him when he thought Sephiroth might just win and they both appeared when all had been said and done. But…

Yes, part of him had been childish. Part of him wanted to be berated for the poor treatment of the buster sword because then, at least, he’d have heard his voice. His grip tightened momentarily. Yes, Cloud had changed, but so had they all. Did he truly change so much that he no longer wanted anything to do with him? Or did he not care?

Cloud pulled the sword out of the dirt in one swift movement. It wasn’t fair of him to think like that. He passed a hand over the large blade, inspecting it. He knew immediately what needed to be done and where, when he was finished, it would be placed. The cliffs would no longer be serve as its resting place. He slid it into one of the holders that would fit it and looked out over the cliffs.

“Even when we win,” he murmured to the sky, “I feel like I lost.” He was certain it had nothing to do with Sephiroth’s cryptic parting words, but neither could he completely pinpoint the source. The echoing winds were not feeling partial to imparting any great wisdom on him it seemed. Cloud straddled Fenrir and pulled down his goggles, but something stayed his hand on the ignition. A gust suddenly picked up, blowing against his skin almost like a caress. “I miss you.” He breathed into the wind. He then kicked Fenrir to life and sped away from the cliffs.
