Yesterday I saw one of my old high school crushes on Facebook. I've been looking for her for like, forever: on social networking sites, in Manila, in Iloilo. Once I had her number, but back then I was a penniless student and couldn't afford a mobile phone call (unlike now, where I burn through phone credit like Nero) and could only afford to text her. Nevertheless, now I have found her.
Her name was Ana Leah. It turns out that when I was searching for her, I was typing in "Ana" as "Anna", hence, I couldn't find her.
Long story short: back in 2001, I visited her at her home with a friend. I actually met her only once before: she was the muse-slash-sponsor of our friendly rival school in the CAT drills, and since I was my school's Corps Commander, I was pretty goddamn famous. She actually scolded me for quietly laughing at the opposite school's adjutant.
When I visited her, I made up my mind: I was going to give her a rose. She was a petite girl, not quite striking but absolutely beautiful once you look a little closer. And I can remember giving her the lyrics to the Eagles' song "I Can't Tell You Why". Don't ask me why I chose the song: it just popped into my head one day.
I remember that when I gave her the rose, she asked me what it meant. I told her it means whatever you want it to mean. She was puzzled.
And I also remember getting beat up in the face after we came from her house. Add that to the fact that the last guy to court her was stabbed to death a few weeks before I visited her. I kid you not, folks.
Needless to say, I stopped. It was only after one of my high school friends told me that Ana Leah liked me and would have said yes to me had I courted her for real that I started kicking myself, repeatedly.
Well, now I have found her again. Maybe this time, it will be different.
(I guess I can't really call her an old flame because we never had a relationship, but damn! I was this close. And she is just the perfect dream girl for anybody: smart, sweet, beautiful. Damn, now I want to go home and visit her in Cotabato. Hahahaha.)
