Chapter 1: The Years Go By

September 28, 1992

Chelsea, Massachusetts

"Tristan, can you get your stuff"

Tristan rose from the wrapped up wooden chair and lifted up a small box with his name scribed neatly on the side from the piles of stuff. He walked down the metal ramp of the moving truck looking out at the neighborhood that was laid out on the street. Every house looked almost exactly the same, a pale blue with a small pair of stairs leading up to the porch and a white picket fence separating it from the other houses.

He didn't get what the big deal was.

His mother had talked on and on about how wonderful it was going to be to live in a real house in a small quiet suburb as if their condo in Manhattan was the worst thing ever. They'd left the busy city bustling with people and character for a plain city in Massachusetts no one's ever heard of.

He walked up the porch, dropping his box in the living room than turned to go back to the moving van. He walked down the small steps watching as a small figure ran towards him.

"Stop!"

He halted in his tracks as the figure which he could see now was a girl, bent down to the ground taking two fingers out to lift a curled up worm from the cement, bring it over to the mildew ridden grass.

"You almost stepped on it." She said bouncing up to her feet and turning to face him.

The girl looked wild with her thick deep brown fizzled hair going down to her shoulders, hiding her small excited face. She wore a loose white bohemian style shirt that looked a size too big for her with green grass stains that also plagued her loose light brown pants.

"I'm Kira" She said holding out her hand to him.

He looked down at her hand stuck out in front of him with disgust.

"I'm Tristan and that's not going to happen." He said pointing to her hand. "Wash your hands first."

She looked down at her hand dropping it down to her side with her smile diminished slightly but still shining bright.

"How old are you."

"12"

The smile grew to her eyes and he let out a heavy sigh. He was done with this already.

"I'll 11 but I turn 12 in a week.

"Good for you."

She nodded her head and opened her mouth to speck again.

"My Birthday---"

"Look" He said. "I don't really know you and to be honest I don't really care."

Her smile dropped and he took a step to the side into the grass to walk around her.

"You're a jerk!" Kira said as he walked past her.

He just rolled his eyes and tried to continue walking until she sent a powerful shove to his side knocking him down. He landed hard on his arm, sliding on the wet grass and his skin scrapping against the hard ground.

"What the heck is your problem!" He said pushing himself upright, sitting on the grass.

He dusted off the grass and dirt from his arm and pants before he turned to face her as she loomed over him, with her cheeks puffed out on her small face.

"My problem is having more brats like you around."

"So you're solution is to be a bully." He said with a raised eyebrow. "I'm not even a brat."

"Then why are you acting like one." Kira said putting her hands on her hips. "Cause right now you look like one."

He put his hands down in front of him prompting to look at them as mild guilt set in.

"I'm sorry." Tristan mumbled briefly glancing up at her than returning to look down at his hands. "I didn't mean to be a jerk."

"Apology accepted." Kira said sitting down next to him. "See not that hard being nice."

"You're weird." He said glancing at her from the corner of his eye.

"I know" She said a smile gleaming on her face.
~ "I'm not touching that."

Tristan took a step back as she lifted Tim out of his glass tank. Kira sat back on her bed keeping Tim close to her.

"Don't be afraid it's just Tim." Kira said holding him up and out towards him. "He's friendly."

"It's a frog."

"He's an oriental fire bellied toad."

"It doesn't matter what it's called it's still a frog."

She rolled her eyes and looked down at Tim as he walked around her palm. He didn't even look like a frog with the top of his short stubby body a bright green with black correlations scattered around his body, while the bottom was a slightly dimmer orange.

"Why didn't you get a dog or something?" He said eyeing Tim like he was going to hop out of my hand.

"Because you don't have to potty train Tim."

"Why would you name a frog Tim?"

"For the last time he isn't a frog."

She brought Tim closer to her and leaned over to give him a small kiss on the head.

"That's just nasty." He said taking a step away from her. "Why would you do something like that?"

"I can't believe you're afraid of Tim." Kira laughed tauntingly. "He's only mildly toxic."

His eyes grew wide than narrowed suspiciously.

"You're messing with me."

"Really" Kira said with a raised eyebrow. "Then you wouldn't mind holding him for a minute."

She put her hands toward him and fought off the urge to laugh as he twitched. He looked down at Tim taking a deep breath as he held out his hands. She picked Tim up placing him gently in Tristan's hand.

"See not that bad." She said giving him a firm pat on the shoulder.

He was starting to get giddy.

Tristan held the water balloon in his hand, the cold water leaving a layer of fog on the blue rubber that watered under his fingertips and dripped down the sides. He wondered how far he could actually throw it. He looked out the hotel balcony at the beach below, it's inhabitance filled with teenagers, college students, and locals who were enjoying the rest of the summer. Nate put his hand on his shoulder with a mischievous smile on his face as he held his own balloon in his hand.

"This is stupid guys." Bella whined sitting on his bed near the balcony. "We're going to get caught."

"No body asked you to participate" Nate said. "You can leave."

"Fine, come on Kira--"

"I'm staying." Kira said picking up a balloon from one of the bags that Nate had set up after they thought up of the plan.
Bella sighed throwing down her beach bag on the floor and coming over to the balcony.

"Fine but if you get caught--"

"Group of girls about 17 or 18 at 9 o'clock." Nate interrupted pointing over at a group of 4 girls walking toward the crowded beach. "You ready."

Tristan nodded his head, pulled his arm back and threw watching as balloon flew through the air. As if guided by some unexplainable force they hit their intended victims, bursting on contact. The girls looked around disoriented grabbing towels from their beach bags until one of them turned around and pointed toward the balcony. The other girls turned to look and he felt Nate's arms wrap around his shoulder, so he cracked the girls a wide smile and waved.

"Assault and driving with a suspended license." Joan said opening the cell. "She's lucky the guy's not going to be pressing charges."

"Thanks Joan." Kira said as she watched her sister stumble out of the holding cell, her purple cocktail dress crinkled from being slept in, and her black stilettos hanging from her fingers.

Victoria kept her head hung low as they headed toward her red Beetle, that her mother had surprised her with at graduation. Victoria slid into the passengers seat tucking her legs up close to her like she would do when she was in trouble as a kid and turned her head to face her.

"I'll pay you back when I get the money." Victoria said her scratchy voice breaking the silence. Kira looked at her, with her red rimmed eyes, mangled hair and felt anger creep up insider her. Anger at the number of times she'd heard those words.

"Like you always pay me back." She said watching as Victoria turned away at the harsh tone in her voice. "You know that it's not even about the fucking money."

"You know I'm trying to do better." Victoria snapped. "It's not easy you know."

"You're right it's hard to not depend on your little sister for more than a month." Kira said her tone getting louder as she continued. "I pay your bail, I give you rides when you live 2 hours away, I even sometimes have to pay your god damn bills."

"I don't make you do all that." Victoria said. "You choose to so don't go around blaming me for something you choose to do."

"You're right." Kira huffed. "So now I choose not to."

Kira reached over to the glove compartment grabbed her sky blue wallet and pulled out a fifty dollar bill from it's pocket.

"Here." Kira said shoving it at Victoria. "Now get out of my car."

"What--"

"Get out of my car." Kira repeated with more force. "You can get a taxi, buy drugs, liquor or whatever you fucking want with the money but it's not my problem."

"Kira, I don't have time for this--"

"Neither do I." Kira said. "I've got a flight to catch in about five hours so I don‘t need your bullshit."

Victoria looked at her for a moment before realizing she was serious and snatched the money from her hand opening the car door.

"College sure has made you a real bitch." Victoria yelled slamming the door.

Kira dug into her pockets fetched her key and started the car.
