Conflicted

Last night I was at an Obama watch party.. and needless to say it was AMAZING!!  I was soo thrilled.  However, when I got to class today there was drama.
This girl in my class said she was mad because Obama only won because minorities who never voted before voted for this time because Obama is black.  She was getting extremely passionate talking about it, as the only black student in class today I was feeling very uncomfortable.  After that, my professor starting talking about McCain being a POW and saying that Obama will be for the redistribution of wealth and the class got very heated.   The one Obama supporter who had the guts to say anything was being yelled at by the three McCain supporters, it was horrible.  As I was sitting there I couldn't help but think how this seemed to be exactly how I saw the two parties throughout the entire process.
The people on the right were yelling and screaming, and the people on the left were trying to make peace between the two.  It really got me thinking about the different feelings that I have been having over the last 9 hours.  A big thing that was said for McCain over these election months is that he has more experience than Obama, being in the Senate and being a POW.   Truth be told, he does.
McCain has been the in the Senate longer than Obama, had to go through war that Obama never had to go through, that is all true.  Also, I'm sure there were a lot of minorities who got out and voted for Obama just because he's black.  I think the issue runs deeper than that though.  I think what it really comes down to is what the different campaigns represented as a whole.  When I saw the Republican convention and speeches, what I felt from them was anger.  When I looked at the Democratic convention and speeches, what I felt was hope.  When I hear Obama speak, I really think that we can turn our country around to a place where everyone can feels safe and welcomed.  It was like the majority of the country came together for the first time in a long time for this, and we got it done.  Now that we know we can do this, we know we can do anything.  A sense of hope, which I think is what we need in this time of hopelessness.
