“Mom? Is it really you? Or is this some kind of joke?” I asked, afraid of what the answer might me.

“No Ryan, it’s really me. It’s not a joke.” She answered, reassuringly.

“Wow, it’s like … just … fuck. Wow. I don’t even really know what to say.”

“You’re not mad at me are you? I mean, I can understand if you are, really. You probably are and don’t really wanna talk to me at all. I wouldn’t talk to me if I was in your position.” Mom said, talking fast.

“No mom it’s okay. I’m not mad. I’m just surprised. The last thing I’d expect was you to call. Why?”

“Why? What do you mean Ry? It’s okay for me to call you Ry, yeah?” She asked.

“Yeah it’s okay. I mean, why did you leave?”

“It’s complicated.” Mom answered.

“Yeah, well I’ve grown up. I’m not that little boy anymore. I think I’ll be able to understand why you left.”

The line goes silent and I know I’ve said the wrong thing.

“Don’t worry about it.” I said; the disappointment was clear in my voice.

“Ryan-” She began.

“No mom. Forget I asked.”

“Ryan, please don’t be mad. I hate that I left you and if I could take it back I would. I just don’t want to talk about that right now. Not when we have the present to talk about.”

There was an awkward silence and I wanted to say something, anything, to break it.

“So, your friend Brendon seems like a lovely boy, nice manners.” Mom said.

“Yeah he is.” I smiled. “He is.”

----------------------------------

"I'm going out to see him." Brendon announced, jumping up from his place on the couch in between Game and Will.

"Brendon, no. You can't interrupt this." Gabe quickly grabbed Brendon's arm before he could go any further.

“Gabe it’s his mom!  Remember? You know that woman that left him when he was only a kid!” Brendon argues.

"Brendon, Gabe's right. You can't interrupt this, or stop him talking to his mum. He has to do this Bren, he has too." Will says quietly, trying to calm Brendon down.

"Will, he’s been out there for over an hour -” Brendon begins.

“After not speaking to her for 7 years. Bren, just leave him.” Will interrupts.

Brendon sinks back into the couch and pouts.

"You don't understand." Brendon says miserably, putting his head in his hands.

"Well then help us to understand! Brendon it's not like she is taking him away, they are clearly talking on the phone. He needs this, he needs to talk to her and he needs her in his life." Gabe says, clearly annoyed.

"Gabe, you haven't seen how much she hurt him. Ryan is my best friend and I care about him so much. You know how hurt he was after last time she left? Remember when he told us everything? How do we know she isn't going to come back and then just take of like last time? He is my best friend and I couldn't stand to see him if she did that." Brendon argues.

"Bren, we don't even know why she's calling. Just calm down. We'll ask Ryan what she said when he get's back, if he wants us to know." William places a comforting hand on Brendon's back and rubs little circles.

Brendon looks at him and nods, biting back a reply. Only Brendon and Spencer really knew how much Ryan had been hurting and how much Ryan really had to deal with. He knew the smile that Ryan had on his face everyday wasn't always real. The real smiles rarely came out. Only they knew how much he hated looking after his drunken father. Brendon suspected that they didn't even really know most of what happens with his father. Sometimes Ryan would have a fair few bruises after one of his father's famous drunken rages, yet Ryan would still say he fell over or make up some other excuse. Brendon knew he couldn't make them understand. He didn't want them to understand either. He liked having that special friendship with Ryan that only one other person has. It made Brendon feel special, it made him feel needed.

Brendon looks back over at Gabe and Will, who had started a Nintendo game while Brendon had been thinking about Ryan. He spreads himself on the couch and laughs as they started throwing insults at each other.

"Gabe, you’re playing like my mum!" Will teases, staring at the screen.

"Well your mum must play pretty fuckin' great." Gabe retorts.

"Dude you should change your name Gabriella, your playing like a complete girl." Will says, trying to hold in a laugh.

"Fuck off. You cheated! WILL! We are so playing another game!"

A huff is heard from Gabe as Will passes the finish line, 3 laps before he does.

"Fine, you pick the next game and I'll still kick your arse at it!" Will says with a smirk.

------------------------------------------------------------

I lean against the doorway and suppress a laugh as Will throws an insult to Gabe. I stand there for a few minutes, just watching the scene in front of me. I see Brendon’s head poke up from the couch and his face lights into a big smile.

“Been talking to your long lost cousin, aye?” He asks playfully.

“Yeah, something like that.” I chuckle.

Will and Gabe look up at me with nervous smiles.

"Hey Ry." Will says quietly.

"Yeah, hey Ry." Gabe says.

I walk over to the seat and sit next to Brendon. Gabe and Will go back to the game and I look at the time, surprised to find it’s nearly 8 o’clock.

“Bren? Isn’t Brent meant to be here already?” I ask, slightly confused.

“Oh yeah. Well he sent me a text saying he was coming here with Spence and they’ll be here at about 8:30.” Brendon answers.

“Oh okay. Cool.” I look up at Brendon and smile, and he smiles back.

"So, how was it?" Brendon asks quietly.

"Can I talk to you about it later? I mean, when it's just you, me and Spencer?"

"Yeah, that’s cool man."

"Dude, I am so hungry. Where did the pizza go?" I put my hand on my stomach and groan.

"Uh, I have no idea." Brendon laughs.

"Oh Gabey, where is the pizza?" I ask, my voice full of fake sickness.

"It's in the fridge, just reheat it. You know where everything is." Gabe answers, not looking up from his game.

I roll my eyes and get up off the couch and motion for Brendon to follow.

I head straight for the fridge, grabbing out a pizza box and a bottle of Coke.

"You want any?" I ask Brendon.

"No I’m fine dude.” Brendon answers.

It’s silent for a few moments as I grab 2 glasses from the cupboard and pour a drink for me and Brendon.

"I have two sisters." I say quietly, handing him a glass. I open the door to the beeping microwave and put the pizza on a plate.

"Really? That's awesome." Brendon smiles brightly.

"Yeah. Kyra is 3 and Lily is only a few months." I look at Brendon, feeling proud.

Brendon looks like he’s about to say something, but gets interrupted by Gabe.

"RYAN! BRENDON! STOP MAKING BABIES AND GET IN HERE! SPENCER AND BRENT ARE WAITING!"

I can feel my face go a little red and quickly walk out, Brendon following.

“Hey Spence, hey Brent.” I say as I enter the room.

“Yeah, hey guys.” Brendon says.

“Geeze Ry! Do you want a whole large pizza to yourself next time!” Spencer says, looking at my plate.

“That would be quite nice actually.” I retort.

As Brendon walks past Gabe, who is now on the couch, he gives him a smack over the back of the head and I can’t help but laugh.

"Owww,” Gabe whines. “What was that for?" He pouts.

"Coz you’re a fucking retard Gabe." Brendon laughs.

"Just coz I said you were making babies with Ryan." Gabe says, poking his tongue out.

As the insults got thrown at Gabe and Brendon (with Will joining in every now and then) I know I could get away with using the next few minutes to think. I haven't had the chance yet. I open up my phone and looked at the photo mom had sent of my sisters. My sisters. It sounded weird to me. I wasn’t an only child anymore. Kyra already looked a lot like me. She had the same dark brown hair and the same golden coloured eyes. She had the same fair complexion and a wide smile on her cute face. Lily on the other had dark blonde hair and bright blue eyes. Obviously, more like her father. Whoever he was. As I replay the conversation with my mom over in his head, I can’t help but smile. I loved the sound of my moms voice, it was sweet and angelic. I loved the sweet things she said to me and the way she made me feel special.

"Ryan? Are you okay?" Brendon asks, a look of concern on his pretty features.

"Hmm, yeah. What?"

"We asked you about five times what movie you wanted to watch and you just had a smile on your face." Gabe answers, smiling.

"Oh yeah sorry." I say, my face going red. "Just pick any movie. Seriously."

"Harry Potter it is!" Will smiles triumphantly, placing it in the DVD player.
