history

saw a movie last night about the downfall of the nazi party and the Russian invasion of Berlin, conveniently called Downfall. it wasn't a Hollywood blockbuster but rather a historical German film based on years of intense historical research and first hand accounts. I had nightmares the whole night, i still can't get some of the scenes out of my head, still can't stop thinking about it. not because of fake blood and guns, but because this actually happened.

there wasn't frivolous violence or a fake story line for the sole purpose of enjoyment, fact by fact it unfolded. people actually lived and died through this, people actually followed the nazi doctrine like robots, kids were actually shot point blank, bodies actually hung from nooses in trees like decorations, pets were actually eaten as meals, no matter what side you were on, this was 1945 Europe (outside the death camps) and that was what you saw.

my grandpa never talked about the war and through books and classes i set out to learn why. but with the movie i finally understood. you can read every detail in a book but seeing it in a factual context changes everything.

if it wasn't for photography, i would become a historian.
