Fever Dreams pt 2----for ayeayecap

It's been a tough, tough week.  Her first international assignment in Belgium, couldn't have been counted as a bigger disaster if she tried.  An international summit, ambassadors from all around the world gathered together in one place to discuss the future.  She had her assignment, Henri Arnard, and played well enough as the young interpreter.   ( Read more... )

When Black Widow calls in, it's sooner than he'd expected. That alone sends up a red flag, but she's audibly shaken, as well. What the hell's going on? "Situation? What happened, Black Widow?"

She clears her throat, trying to regain that stoicism she's known for. But she can't. Not with Winter Soldier---he knows her. Knows even that light tremble in her voice. "Target is eliminated. Mission aborted and eliminated. Information not gathered," she says, closing her eyes. "I need a way out. Soon."

There it is. She's cut her teeth on death but still failed the mission. Failed him. And she shivers when she thinks about how much she hates failing. Hates not doing right by him.

"Idiot girl! Idiot, idiot!" He took a deep breath, attempting to regain his own coolness. Yelling at the girl wouldn't solve anything. It was over. "An extraction team is on the way. I'd have words with you when you return."

She takes his words, deserving them, her eyes averted as if he was standing there. She expected this and more. One of twenty eight young women...and failed her first time. She wouldn't be surprised if they pulled her completely. "Yes, Comrade Winter Soldier," she answers formally. "I will be ready when I return to carry out whatever punishment you deem fit."

She should be thankful he's not standing there; by the time she arrives, he'll have had some time to cool down, and might not lash out at her like he would have had he been there when he first learned of her failure.

Black Widow's failure will reflect poorly on him as well as her. He'll be accused of poor judgement or, worse, letting her beauty cloud his thinking. Her beauty has clouded his thinking, but she's also quick, smart. He'd truly thought her ready. What could have happened to make her botch this?

When the extraction team arrives, Black Widow in tow, the soldier is ready for them. "Walk with me," he orders Black Widow. "I want you to describe to me what happened in detail."

When she stands before him, she's more scared than she was when she called. Not that she'd admit to that feeling, but she does look worried. She moves with him, a step behind him, head bowed, and looking every inch the young woman in trouble with someone she cares about. "The target invited me to his suite," she explains, glancing over at him, trying to make him understand that she didn't know what to do. "And he called me 'Red'. I...thought he knew. I thought I'd be compromised. I didn't know what else to do, Comrade. I did what I thought was best. To stay alive."

He's the one that taught her to stay alive, and worry about what happens to herself, because very few other people will.

He supposes this fluke is from lack of information. While they'll both be reprimanded, they'll also both be forgiven. While he's still angry with her, some of the worry drops off. "Natalia, you're not compromised until someone pulls a gun." He reaches toward her to toy with her hair. "He was likely referring to your hair. But you can't be the one to throw the first punch. This indiscretion of yours will cost us both; it will reflect poorly on me as your mentor as well as you as a student."

She knows he's angry, but not as angry. If he's willing to touch her, play with her hair, then he's not as angry as he wants to think, or wants her to think. She leans into the touch a little, looking at him. "I am sorry," she says, as close to a pout as ever comes to her. She doesn't like to be in trouble, and she knows she is. "I will find a way to make this right."

Natasha shifts to move in front of him, glad to be safe again. She's still blood spattered, and keyed up from the kill. "Does it always feel like that?"

He snorts, withdrawing his hand. "I wouldn't know. I've never failed." It's arrogant, yes, but it's a different kind of arrogance from the haughtiness new recruits often have. It's the confidence of a man who has earned the right to be arrogant. "You do that, fever girl. Find a way to fix this, and they'll love you." He has no idea how she could fix this. She'd killed the man who was supposed to be her source. Which is why if she does fix this, she'll earn their respect instead of their ire.

She shakes her head. Misunderstanding. She wasn't clear what she meant, but the moment, the question has passed her now. She shifts her weight, her stance, taking back her usual way of walking. She will recover this; she'll find a way. She just has to settle enough to think. Think think.

What was she supposed to do in his suite anyway? They'd never explained much about that, and she'd still never been with a man. Most were afraid that she would kill them the moment it was over anyway. She'd thought about it. But wouldn't it have also gone just as badly had she had no experience? Or would the dear ambassador preferred it?

"I was his interpreter for two days," she murmurs aloud, before a slow smile covers her face. "I need to send a telegram. All the files he would need...they would be at his office at the embassy. All we need to do is have them couriered over." And if they do this soon enough, they can have the information before anyone realizes he's dead.

A slow grin spreads across his face. "There's a good girl. You'll have to hurry, though." He knows that if she does this fast enough, it won't even matter much that she killed him. If there's a way they can still get the information.

And that grin, and the praise, she does something impulsive. Rash. Ridiculous. Adrenaline drenched. She leans up and kisses him. Once she realizes what she's done, or maybe before she's even processed it that far, she's pulled back from him and is running to complete the mission properly. Or at least as properly as she can.

That kiss shocks him, and it's a pleasant surprise to find that for all his jadedness, he even still can be shocked. He shakes his head, chuckling as she runs away.

It would appear that for all her condemnations of the other Red Room girls, she's just like them in this respect. Young and inexperienced, she hungers for a man's touch. Well. Perhaps he'll give her a reward if she completes this mission.

He knows it's dangerous to even be thinking such things, but there's just something about her. Humanity beneath the surface, and he seems to have scratched that surface. It makes him wonder if his own surface can be scratched. But humanity would be a liability, and he can't afford that.

Yes, she certainly has a taste and a hunger. Part of her wants to chalk it up to being able to better carry out her missions. But part of her knows it's more than that; it's him. Her charming and tough mentor. She wonders if they'll continue to work together on future missions if she can pull this off. She wants to. Wants to be with him, wants to make him proud of her. It's the way she's happiest when Ivan is proud of her accomplishments, but much different. She thinks about Winter Soldier late at night, when she should be sleeping. Wonders about different things. Wonders if the metal of his replaced arm and fingers would be cool, and how long it would take to warm up.

She has the paperwork within the hour, and is quite pleased with herself when she makes her reappearance. She has the files in a leather satchel, and a gleam in her eyes. "Everything went according to plan," she says, smirking slightly. Confidence is back. Even if she is still nervous. "Have I done well?" Reward would be much appreciated.

Were she to indulge her curiosity, Natalia would find that his metal arm is cool and unfeeling. He can't gauge its temperature except by touching it, and on more than one cold morning has been unpleantly shocked by how freezing it is. The arm is incapable of picking up any sensations besides pressure, and he's very grateful for the one sensation he can pick up. But still, he doesn't know how he lost the original arm...

The soldier thinks of Natalia outside of work sometimes, too, but it's with the kind of worry that puts a crease in his brow. Worry for what would happen if they acted on their attraction toward one another- because it's very clear at this point that the attraction is mutual. But now that she's made the first fumbling gesture, he's not sure they can go back, and he's not so sure he wants to.

"You have," he answers, and it's clear from his tone that he means it. "You've done very well." He smirks at her. "I'm going to go take a shower." It's not quite an invitation, though he would not be upset if she chose to ( ... )

Soon. Very soon she'll indulge herself, give into that curiosity and find out. She doesn't pity him---she knows better, and knows he'd never pity her if the situation suddenly reversed---she's simply curious. A young girl learning about a potential lover in a very hesitant sense. Mostly because she doesn't want to admit that vulnerability even to him. She wonders if he'll somehow hold her 'responsible' for her lack of experience, or if he'll be pleased to help her experience these new things together ( ... )
