What not: You will not learn how to paint a perfect face or how to make your trees look more lifelike. These courses are mainly about expression. The last thing she’s interested in is your skill in hyper-realism. Students are encouraged to be expressive in whatever way they feel is ‘right’.

What then:
  • Your first assignment will be to make a canvas. Students will be required to bring a self-made canvas to class this is required.
  • You will make a start to paint on other types of surfaces. All students are encouraged express their own desire and put their creativeness into the material they wish to use, from silk to brick.
  • You will learn techniques to paint with water-based and the (limited amount of) oil-based paints. Throughout the course you will learn how to make these water-based paints.
  • There will be a model available, but you will be free to draw whomever you want or to put yourself up as model.
  • Later in the course your class will decide what location on the island you wish to paint. An excursion to that place will be held to paint it.
  • Through anecdotes and relevant stories you will learn about Bloomsbury and their philosophy on art.
Notes:
  • The course will shape as the student input becomes more evident.
  • All students are free visit and work at the gallery/workshop at all times.
  • Nessa is always available for extra lessons.
  • For class Vanessa has made brushes, these are available in class and can be taken by the students upon request if they wish to paint or practice elsewhere. She’ll love to help you make your own, though
